Job Description: Certified Substance Use Disorder Counselor

Position Summary
The Certified Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Counselor provides direct counseling and treatment services to individuals struggling with substance use challenges. This role is responsible for managing a caseload of patients, developing treatment plans, documenting progress, and supporting recovery through evidence-based practices. The counselor also plays a key role in patient education, relapse prevention, and referrals to community resources.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide individual and group counseling sessions for patients with substance use disorders.
- Conduct intake assessments, develop treatment plans, and maintain accurate case documentation.
- Facilitate discharge planning, including referrals to community resources and aftercare programs.
- Support and mentor registered counselors and interns.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA, ethical standards, and organizational policies.
- Participate in continuing education and professional development activities.
- Contribute to a safe, supportive, and recovery-focused environment.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma required; Associate or Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
- Valid certification or registration from CCAPP, CADTP, or CAADE.
- Completion of 315 hours of AOD-specific education.
- Minimum of 160 hours supervised practicum and 2,080 hours of work experience.
- Passing score on the IC&RC Written Exam, CATC exam, or equivalent California-approved test.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain within 90 days).
- Valid California driver’s license and proof of auto insurance preferred.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of evidence-based practices in substance use counseling.
- Ability to manage caseloads effectively and maintain detailed, accurate records.
- Excellent communication skills—both verbal and written—with active listening abilities.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to remain calm in high-stress situations.
- Knowledge of local treatment resources and referral networks preferred.
- Proficiency with computers and office software (Word, email, databases).
- Commitment to professional ethics, confidentiality, and patient-centered care.
- Ability to work with diverse populations and demonstrate cultural sensitivity.

Pay: $24.00 - $30.00 per hour
