Job Description: Certified Substance Use Disorder Counselor

Department: Residential Services

Position Summary

The Certified Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Counselor provides direct counseling and treatment services to individuals struggling with substance use challenges. This role is responsible for managing a caseload of patients, developing treatment plans, documenting progress, and supporting recovery through evidence-based practices. The counselor also plays a key role in patient education, relapse prevention, and referrals to community resources.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group counseling sessions for patients with substance use disorders.
  • Conduct intake assessments, develop treatment plans, and maintain accurate case documentation.
  • Facilitate discharge planning, including referrals to community resources and aftercare programs.
  • Support and mentor registered counselors and interns.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, ethical standards, and organizational policies.
  • Participate in continuing education and professional development activities.
  • Contribute to a safe, supportive, and recovery-focused environment.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma required; Associate or Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • Valid certification or registration from CCAPP, CADTP, or CAADE.
  • Completion of 315 hours of AOD-specific education.
  • Minimum of 160 hours supervised practicum and 2,080 hours of work experience.
  • Passing score on the IC&RC Written Exam, CATC exam, or equivalent California-approved test.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain within 90 days).
  • Valid California driver’s license and proof of auto insurance preferred.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of evidence-based practices in substance use counseling.
  • Ability to manage caseloads effectively and maintain detailed, accurate records.
  • Excellent communication skills—both verbal and written—with active listening abilities.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to remain calm in high-stress situations.
  • Knowledge of local treatment resources and referral networks preferred.
  • Proficiency with computers and office software (Word, email, databases).
  • Commitment to professional ethics, confidentiality, and patient-centered care.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and demonstrate cultural sensitivity.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $24.00 - $30.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
