Training and Development Manager

Position Summary

The Laboratory Trainer is responsible for delivering hands-on and virtual technical training to laboratory personnel, facilitating onboarding programs, and conducting competency assessments across all testing platforms. This role serves as the frontline resource for employee development, ensuring that all company personnel are properly trained on laboratory instrumentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety protocols, and regulatory requirements.

Working under the direction of the Quality Director, the Laboratory Trainer builds required training for each position, delivers the training, tracks trainee progress, maintains accurate training records, and supports the continuous improvement of training programs to meet ISO/IEC 17025 and state cannabis regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities

Training Delivery & Facilitation

  • Working with subject matter experts, produce the training programs.
  • Direct and guide employees through the training process, quality systems, and regulatory compliance
  • Deliver hands-on technical training on laboratory instrumentation including HPLC, GC-MS, ICP-MS, and other analytical platforms
  • Train personnel on sample preparation, testing methodologies, data analysis, and result reporting
  • Facilitate training on SOPs, work instructions, and laboratory information management systems (LIMS)
  • Provide refresher training and continuing education to existing staff as needed
  • Update the training systems as needed
  • Shadow and mentor new employees during their probationary period to reinforce learning and answer questions

Competency Assessment & Documentation

  • Administer written and practical competency assessments to evaluate employee proficiency
  • Observe and evaluate trainee performance on testing procedures and equipment operation
  • Document training completion, assessment scores, and competency sign-offs in training records and LIMS
  • Identify skill gaps or areas requiring additional training and coordinate remediation with supervisors
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date training files for audit and accreditation purposes

Training Materials & Content Support

  • Assist in updating training materials, presentations, and job aids to reflect SOP changes and regulatory updates
  • Contribute to the development of training videos, e-learning modules, and visual training aids
  • Provide feedback to the Training Manager on training program effectiveness and employee learning needs
  • Organize and maintain training materials, supplies, and equipment in designated training areas

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all training sessions emphasize laboratory safety, proper PPE usage, and emergency procedures
  • Reinforce compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards, state cannabis regulations, and company policies
  • Report safety concerns, non-conformances, or training-related issues to management promptly
  • Participate in internal audits and external inspections as needed to support training program compliance

Collaboration & Communication

  • Partner with department supervisors and analysts to coordinate training schedules and minimize operational disruption
  • Communicate trainee progress and concerns to the Training Manager and department leads
  • Serve as a positive, supportive resource to foster a culture of learning and continuous improvement

Qualifications

Education

  • Associate’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Laboratory Science, or a related field required
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred

Experience

  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience working in a laboratory environment, preferably cannabis testing or analytical chemistry
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory instrumentation such as HPLC, GC, LC-MS, or ICP-MS required
  • Previous experience in training, mentoring, or teaching roles preferred but not required
  • Experience working in an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory a plus

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong understanding of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), quality systems, and safety protocols
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly
  • Patient, approachable, and able to work effectively with learners of varying skill levels
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple training sessions
  • Comfortable working independently and taking initiative to support training needs
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); experience with LIMS systems preferred

Working Conditions

This position requires significant time in the laboratory environment conducting hands-on training. The role involves standing for extended periods, working with chemicals and laboratory equipment, and adhering to all laboratory safety protocols including proper PPE usage. Some computer-based work for documentation and training preparation is required. Standard business hours apply, with occasional flexibility needed to accommodate training schedules.

Pay: $70,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
