SUMMARY 

We are seeking a motivated and technically skilled intern to assist in the development of a custom device for measuring flexural creep in plastic strips. This project involves integrating a transducer, circuit board, and data logger to capture and analyze material deformation over time. The intern will work closely with the Materials & Quality Management team in Casa Grande, AZ, gaining hands-on experience in instrumentation, electronics, and materials testing.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.

  • Assemble and calibrate displacement transducers for flexural creep measurement.
  • Design and test basic electronic circuits for signal conditioning and data acquisition.
  • Interface sensors with microcontrollers or data loggers to record position data.
  • Assist in developing fixtures and mechanical setups for creep testing.
  • Document procedures, test results, and troubleshooting steps.
  • Collaborate with engineering and quality teams to refine device performance.

 

COMPETENCIES 

  • Basic understanding of electronic components and circuit design.
  • Familiarity with sensors, transducers, and data acquisition systems.
  • Ability to read schematics and use electronic test equipment (e.g., multimeters, oscilloscopes).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Effective communication and documentation skills.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

  • Current enrollment in or completion of a bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science & engineering, mechatronics or robotics engineering, applied physics or engineering physics, or similar field 

Coursework or project experience in instrumentation, electronics, or materials testing is preferred.

OTHER SKILLS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the level of knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 

  • Experience with microcontrollers (e.g., Arduino, Raspberry Pi) is a plus.
  • Basic programming skills (Python, C/C ) for data logging and automation.
  • CAD or 3D modeling experience for fixture design is beneficial but not required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Hands-on lab work involving small components and tools.
  • Occasional lifting of equipment or test setups (up to 25 lbs).
  • Work performed in a lab or workshop environment with standard safety protocols.
  • Flexible hours with potential for part-time or full-time internship depending on availability.
