Job Summary
The Consulting Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) provides clinical support, oversight, and guidance to psychiatric nurse practitioners who deliver direct mental health care to residents in nursing homes. This leadership/consulting role focuses on ensuring high-quality, compliant, and effective psychiatric services across multiple facilities. The consulting PMHNP serves as a clinical resource, promotes consistency in care delivery, and collaborates with internal teams and facility leadership to strengthen behavioral health programs.
Responsibilities
- Provide clinical support and consultation to PMHNPs serving residents in nursing homes.
- Review documentation to ensure accuracy, regulatory compliance, and clinical quality.
- Assist with case discussions, medication management questions, and challenging clinical situations.
- Promote consistency and alignment with evidence-based practices across all providers.
- Conduct regular check-ins with PMHNPs to offer mentorship, feedback, and support.
- Collaborate with internal leadership and facility partners to address concerns and improve care coordination.
- Monitor updates to CMS guidelines and ensure team adherence to evolving standards in long-term care psychiatry.
- Participate in quality assurance initiatives to evaluate and strengthen service delivery.
- Represent the organization at professional meetings, client events, and networking opportunities as needed.
Experience
Candidates should possess the following skills and experience:
- Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing with a specialization in Psychiatry/Mental Health.
- Active PMHNP license and ANCC board certification.
- Prescriptive authority and DEA registration in applicable state(s), even if not actively prescribing.
- Minimum of 3 years of psychiatric clinical experience, preferably in long-term care or geriatrics.
- Previous experience providing clinical oversight or support to psychiatric providers strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of psychotropic medication use, behavioral health protocols, and CMS regulations.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to guide and mentor providers in a supportive, collaborative manner.
- Proficiency with electronic health records and behavioral health documentation standards.
