Paramedics shall cover the range of services provided in a civilian medical treatment facility:
- Perform the full range of field/pre-hospital support and ambulance/improvised ambulance services on site at the OCSU and in the field when performing ambulance emergency, transfer, or transport services. The paramedic will practice within the guidelines set by the OCSU Flight Chief/Non- Commissioned Officer in Charge (NCOIC), Physician Assistant, and the Medical Director. Provide emergency hospital and pre-hospital care for all types of patients.
- Recognize medical emergencies and respond appropriately.
- Create, maintain, and dispose of medical documentation as required.
- Participate in Government provided training, new equipment familiarization, and continuing education programs.
- Drive an ambulance/improvised ambulance in all conditions in response to emergency calls. Be prepared to perform assigned duties while on a boat and be willing to obtain a military Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association (ROHVA) license.
- Initiate patient care utilizing treatment protocols and physician orders.
- Interact with the on-scene commander in all exercise/real world disasters and assist with control of the scene and non-injured parties.
- Perform both medical and non-medical patient transfers to receiving facilities as determined by patient needs, physician intervention, and medical control.
- Provide medical coverage during dive and jump operations that may require exposure to different bodies of water. This coverage will take place on both land and water-based platforms and the paramedic shall provide the appropriate standard of care during all these scenarios.
- Provide advanced life support during real world emergency responses, base, and STTS OCSU exercises.
- Participate in the care and upkeep of equipment (i.e. ambulance, life support equipment) and ensure required equipment is available and ready for use after each call and prior to the end of shift.
- Collaborate with medical supply custodian to ensure an adequate stock of consumable supplies and restock as needed.
- Complete patient reports and forms which involve documenting patient's medical condition, and the care rendered.
- May be required to testify in court (i.e., murder trial, DUI, chain of custody) and give depositions.
- May assist with cardiopulmonary resuscitation classes, EMT refresher courses, and ACLS/ALS and PALS training (if qualified).
- Maintain cleanliness and perform basic housekeeping duties of work/rest areas.
- Some travel may be required.
Candidates must meet the following qualifications/certifications.
- Graduation from an accredited Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) Paramedic certification course.
- A current, valid paramedic certification from NREMT. Certification must remain current throughout contract performance.
- Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Advanced Life Support (ALS), and Pediatric Advanced Cardiac Life Support (PALS).
- At least two (2) years' experience as a paramedic.
- Knowledge of local hospital and pre-hospital protocols to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care of patients in clinical and pre-hospital settings.
- Valid state issued driver's license and ability to safely operate/drive an ambulance.
