What are the responsibilities and job description for the Early Head Start / Head Start Mentor Coach position at ACHR?
The Alabama Council on Human Relations (ACHR) seeks candidates for an Early Head Start/Head Start (EHS/HS) Mentor Coach position to coordinate classroom staff, activities, services, and monitoring in center with assistance from Center Supervisors. Implements ACHR philosophy and agency-approved curriculum; acts as the educational resource person for the EHS/HS classrooms. Provides intensive coaching to selected classrooms throughout agency.
Conducts CLASS observations and provides feedback as scheduled. Contributes to planning and presentations at teacher meetings and workshops, guides classroom staff toward professional growth.
Works as part of the Education team to ensure the smooth functioning and coordination of Education services within the EHS/HS program and ACHR.
Some of the primary responsibilities include:
- Conducts regularly scheduled site visits to each EHS/HS site.
- Identifies teaching strengths and learning needs, barriers, and weaknesses, by analyzing child outcomes data, and organizing and implementing problem-solving strategies with teachers.
- Assist in facilitating high quality professional development, working with teachers (in groups or individually) to refine their knowledge and skills.
- Monitors instructional effectiveness and child progress using tools (CLASS, Creative Curriculum, TS Gold, ITERS, etc.) and strategies gained through professional development.
- Engages in reflective practice and support each teacher to examine and reflect on his/her practice as well (provide consultative feedback directly to teacher).
- Meets no less than monthly with Director and Managers to review progress and make adjustments relating to professional development needs of teachers.
- Build and maintain confidential relationships with teachers so that a high level of trust is developed and maintained between the teacher and mentor/coach.
- Exceptions to this include imminent physical or psychological danger to the children (child abuse and neglect).
- Remains knowledgeable about current and past research in early childhood development teaching strategies and other coach professional development.
- Analyzes and uses data for instructional decision-making.
- Collaborates with Center Directors, Education Manager, EHS/Disabilities Manager, and EHS/HS Director to identify the site’s teaching and learning needs solving actions and goals.
- Attends all pre-service/in-service training, and regular staff meetings.
- May be required to attend state, regional, and national conferences.
- Facilitate professional learning in communities.
- Assist with required Pre-Service training.
Other required qualifications:
- Must pass pre-employment physical exam
- Must have a Child Abuse Clearance Form on file indicating no record of abuse or neglect
- Must clear a Criminal Background Check (renewed every 5 years)
- Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and vehicle liability insurance
- Submit 3 acceptable work or professional references
- Works effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions, and perceptions
- Oral and written communication skills to develop rapport with children, families, and associates
- Demonstrate computer literacy skills, using MS Office applications and other basic data systems including internet navigation
- Must be honest, dependable and able to meet deadlines
- Self-motivated and able to work independently
