Direct Support Professional (American Sign Language Experience)

Job Summary:

The ASL Direct Support Professional provides individualized support and instruction to Deaf or Hard of Hearing individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities. This role ensures clients receive the necessary support to achieve independence, integration, and quality of life in accordance with their Individual Service Plans (ISPs). 

Key Roles & Responsibilities:

Direct Support & Instruction

  • Provide one-on-one and/or group instruction in American Sign Language to Deaf or Hard of Hearing clients.
  • Support clients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including hygiene, dressing, meal prep, medication reminders, and mobility, as needed.
  • Use ASL and visual supports to teach life skills such as money management, personal safety, cooking, using public transportation, and community access.
  • Facilitate inclusion and communication in group or community settings.
  • Assist clients in developing social skills, self-advocacy, and independence.

Client Advocacy & Communication

  • Communicate effectively with clients using ASL and Deaf culture-competent practices.
  • Serve as a bridge between the client and hearing staff or community members when needed.
  • Promote and respect client choice, dignity, and rights.
  • Advocate for access and accommodations in community, workplace, and residential settings.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate and timely progress notes, logs, incident reports, and service documentation.
  • Track client progress toward ISP goals and report changes or concerns to the supervisor.
  • Follow company policies, licensing regulations, and all safety protocols.

Collaboration & Training

  • Collaborate with behavioral staff, case managers, speech therapists, and other support team members.
  • Attend trainings related to ASL, Deaf culture, disability services, crisis intervention, and more.
  • Participate in staff meetings, in-services, and case reviews as scheduled.
Qualifications:

Required:

  • Fluent in American Sign Language (ASL)
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain)

Preferred:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in Deaf Studies, Education, Social Work, or related field
  • Experience working in SLS, ILS, or behavioral health settings
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture and accessibility best practices

✅ What You Need:

  • Fluency in ASL and English (spoken and written)
  • Prior experience as an interpreter or support staff working with Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing individuals
  • Understanding of Deaf culture and accessibility best practices
  • RID certification preferred, but not required
  • Reliable transportation (local travel may be required)
