Role Description
- Responsible for using clinical history and other patient information in arriving at the proper diagnosis for each cytologic specimen
- Examine cytology specimens for the presence of abnormal cellular changes and pathogens
- Sign out all negative gynecologic cases
- Report other cytologic findings, such as the presence of microorganisms endocervical component
- Evaluate and mark GYN (reactive and reparative, abnormal, questionable or negative)
- Submit reactive and reparative, abnormal and questionable GYN cases to a pathologist for final evaluation
- Record the results of each GYN slide read on the appropriate form/systems/etc. used in the laboratory, in a legible manner
- Submit daily workload of negative GYN cases for a minimum of 10% quality control review (including random high-risk cases) by a supervisory qualified cytotechnologist.
- Maintain appropriate records
- Maintain compliance with workload limits
- Maintain microscope in excellent working condition
- Participate in continuing education in areas relating to Cytology
Qualifications
- Proficiency in Laboratory Skills, including specimen preparation and cellular sample analysis
- Strong knowledge of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
- Experience in implementing and maintaining Quality Control standards
- Certification as a Cytotechnologist by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to identify cellular abnormalities
- Strong commitment to accuracy, confidentiality, and regulatory compliance
- Bachelor’s degree in Cytotechnology, Biology, or a related field is preferred
- Familiarity with laboratory software and diagnostic reporting systems is an advantage
