Summary
The Animal Care department has a primary responsibility for ensuring the well-being of the 18,000 animals at ACCT annually by providing a clean, healthy environment, nutritious food, and enrichment and activity. The Animal Care Supervisor provides oversight of Animal Care Attendants to ensure best practices, policies and procedures are being followed to deliver the highest standards of care. Under the general direction of the Animal Care Manager, the Animal Care Supervisor is responsible for leading the daily assignments and supervision for the animal care department. The Animal Care Supervisor provides direction on all work assignments, oversight of staff training processes for the animal care team, and assists the Animal Care Manager with the maintenance and upkeep of the animal care services department. As a Supervisor, excellent customer service to both the staff and volunteers that work in the organization is required.
Core Responsibilities
Animal Husbandry and Handling
- Provides a clean and healthy environment for animals in ACCT’s care by training Animal Care staff on proper cleaning and sanitation protocols.
- Ensures compliance of all protocols via routine monitoring and ongoing training.
- Directs and assists with movement of animals around the building as indicated by current capacity and an animal’s individual need for care and promotion.
- Completes department operations by supervising workflow for animal care
- Assists Animal Care Manager with staff scheduling as needed for the animal care services department.
- Coordinates daily task training for animal care staff, ensuring adherence to all department protocols
- Coordinates Dog Playgroups for Life training for animal care staff, ensuring adherence to all playgroup activities to reduce kennel anxiety levels.
- Assist with assignments, as needed, when animal care staff are unavailable or unable to be completed in a timely fashion.
- Be observant of the health and behavior of the animals in the shelter; including but not limited to assisting with population counts, euthanasia decisions, and immediately reporting any health or behavioral issues with animals to management.
Kennel and Facility Maintenance
- Ensures the facility appears presentable and organized to all visitors by implementing and overseeing a routine cleaning plan and keeping spaces well organized.
- Identifies and reports facility concerns. Coordinates with the Department of Public Properties when necessary.
- Ensures general upkeep and functionality of kennels and animal care equipment.
Staff Engagement and Development
- Assists Animal Care Attendants in developing a strong sense of pride and accountability in care for the facility and the animals housed within it.
- Promotes a culture of enthusiasm around the department’s day-to-day activities and also protocol and procedure changes.
- Assist with staff training and on-going development.
Other/Administrative
- Assists with departmental scheduling to ensure sufficient coverage for daily operations.
- Possess the ability to write staff corrective action documents and attend grievance hearings as necessary.
- Participates in the hiring process.
- Assists with inventory and ordering of animal care supplies and equipment.
- Coordinates with Leadership and all departments on large scale projects.
- Ensures completion of daily animal count and inventory.
- Participates meaningfully in daily rounds and urgent meetings as assigned.
- Ability to write timestamps for kennel animals.
Qualifications
Passion for the mission of ACCT Philly; has excellent animal behavior and handling knowledge; has strong attention to detail and is able to identify and remedy lack of compliance in protocols; confident giving direction; comfortable managing strong, passionate personalities; able to train others; demonstrates flexibility and is willing to adjust work schedule or flow to meet the needs of the organization; must be adaptable and receptive to rapidly evolving protocols and able to rally others with an air of excitement and opportunity; treats animals and people with respect; has an open mind and is willing to consider differing opinions; is a strong communicator adept at explaining new concepts and constructively coaching individuals; enjoys working with people, including those who may have a significantly less developed understanding of relevant concepts; is comfortable interacting with animals of varying temperaments; ideally is fluent in Spanish; able to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds.
Education and Work Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required; two (2) years or more of animal related work required, animal care experience preferred; two (2) years or more in supervisory role preferred.
Work Environment
ACCT Philly is open to the public daily. An employee may have as many as 300 interactions with the public in a given day, including with volunteers and rescue partners. The shelter operates at a fast pace, and employees are exposed to odors and high levels of noise while performing their job.
Hours/Status
This is a full-time position, averaging a minimum of eight (8) hours per day, forty (40) hours per week. Work schedule including days and hours may vary according to the needs of the organization and will include weekends, nights, and holidays. This position is FLSA exempt status. This is a non-Union position.
Immediate Supervisor: Animal Care Manager
Compensation: $47,000 annually
Introductory Assessment Period
The introductory assessment period runs from the date of hire for 90 days thereafter. For employment in any position with ACCT Philly, this introductory assessment period is the period during which the specifics of the job are learned. During this period, either the employee for ACCT Philly may end the employment relationship without notice or prejudice.
Employment
There is no minimum period of employment guaranteed or implied by acceptance of an employment offer. It is the policy of ACCT Philly that all positions are governed by the needs of the agency, which means that employment is “at will” and for no specified term. Either ACCT Philly or the employee may terminate employment at any time.
