What are the responsibilities and job description for the Accounting Technician position at Accounting/Budget?
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Length of position: year-round, 12 months per year
Hours: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Performs routine (journey-level) administrative support work for the Accounting Department, as well as entry level accounting work for the agency. Work involves maintaining records, filing systems, documents or reports, disseminating information and performing courier duties. Process entry of data in various systems contingent on accounting experience. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Receives cash, verifies deposit slips and maintains cash control records; transports documents, deposits and reports to/from bank, state treasury and various agencies.
- Coordinates and maintains record keeping/filing systems for accounting documents following State of Texas Retention Schedule requirements.
- Verifies payment warrants and prepares warrants for mail or distribution.
- Handles agency Mail Room operations – includes sorting/distributing incoming and outgoing mail, responsible for outgoing certified mail.
- Performs backup duties for Agency Cashier as needed.
- Recording accounting entries in QuickBooks Online (TSD’s internal accounting system for funds held outside of the state treasury) as needed.
- Processing credit card payments from customers in person, or by phone.
- Data entry in various systems as needed.
- Logs incoming mail – invoices, statements, checks.
- Assist Property Manager with annual inventory of capital assets.
- Assists agency cashier with registration and Homecoming (Saturday) activities.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications by Level
Qualifications Required – Accounting Technician I
- Graduation from high school or equivalent certificate.
- One year experience in general office work or business administration.
- Sign language: The applicant does not need to have sign language skills at hire but will be require to participate in sign language classes offered at TSD until reaching a level of SURVIVAL as evaluated on the Signed Communication Proficiency Interview.
Qualifications Required – Accounting Technician II
- Graduation from high school or equivalent certificate.
- One year experience in general office work or business administration with an emphasis
- on bookkeeping and / or accounting operations.
- Knowledge of basic accounting functions.
- Sign language: The applicant does not need to have sign language skills at hire but will be require to participate in sign language classes offered at TSD until reaching a level of SURVIVAL as evaluated on the Signed Communication Proficiency Interview.
Qualifications Required – Accounting Technician III
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in
- accounting, finance, or a related field.
- One year experience in general office work or business administration with an emphasis on bookkeeping and / or accounting operations
- Knowledge of basic accounting functions.
- One year experience processing transactions, payments, vouchers or journal entries in an accounting system.
- Sign language: The applicant does not need to have sign language skills at hire but will be require to participate in sign language classes offered at TSD until reaching a level of SURVIVAL as evaluated on the Signed Communication Proficiency Interview.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- High School diploma or equivalent certificate
- One year experience in general office work or business administration.
- Sign Language: The ultimate required proficiency level for the position using the levels designated in the Signed Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) is survival.
QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field from an accredited college or university.
- One year experience in general office work or business administration with an emphasis on bookkeeping and / or accounting operations
- One year experience working with the State of Texas’ Uniform Statewide Accounting System (USAS), Centralized Accounting and Payroll / Personnel System (CAPPS) or similar software (PeopleSoft, Oracle Financials, SAP, etc).
- One year experience processing transactions, payments, vouchers or journal entries in an accounting system.
- One year experience using QuickBooks Online.
- Knowledge of basic accounting functions.
- One year of demonstrated work experience using Microsoft Excel.
- Proficient sign communications skills
