Job Summary
The position is responsible for preparing and serving food, cleaning kitchen equipment and facilities, and performing other duties designated by the manager.
Essential Duties
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required. - Follows procedures in food preparation, the use and care of equipment, and personal hygiene to ensure that sanitation standards are met as required by the Child Nutrition Services Office and the Virginia Department of Health.
- Follows standards of safety in preparing, storing, and serving food as required by the Child Nutrition Services Office and the Virginia Department of Health.
- Serves customers promptly and courteously, using correct portion sizes. Serves food that is attractive and appealing. Maintains the temperature of food on the serving line and keeps the line clean at all times.
- Processes customers promptly and accurately, paying close attention to ensure that students' lunch status is not divulged.
- Accurately counts money, makes change, and counts the drawer out at the end of the day.
- Operates the dish room, rinses trays and utensils, and washes them through the dish machine; checks trays and utensils for cleanliness before returning them to the lines; cleans the area, including the inside of the dish machine; may be assigned to dispose of trash.
- Cleans assigned work area, including walls, ovens, mixers, tables, steamer, kettle, dish machine, warmer, and utensils; sweeps and mops floors.
- Maintains required forms and records as assigned by the manager.
- Attends job-related training classes and workshops.
- Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED equivalent.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to accurately count money, make change, and count the drawer out at the end of the day.
- Ability to read and write in English and follow written and oral instructions.
- Desire to put forth the best effort in all assigned tasks
- Ability to follow safety precautions to avoid injuries, such as minor cuts, falls, bruises, and scalds.
- Ability to complete written forms and records.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Must have the ability to stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use equipment; see and read printed material with or without vision aids; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly; have physical agility to lift and carry up to 30 pounds; to bend, stoop, walk, and reach overhead. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and students.

Duties are normally performed in a cafeteria environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
