Physical Therapist Consultant (Part-Time)

ACCESSPOINT RI
CRANSTON, RI Part Time
POSTED ON 9/4/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 11/3/2026

At AccessPoint RI, we believe maintaining mobility and independence can make a meaningful difference in an individual’s quality of life. We are seeking a compassionate and collaborative part-time Physical Therapist to provide consultation and therapeutic support to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities living within our residential programs.

As a Physical Therapist, you will work alongside individuals, residential staff, nursing, and other members of the interdisciplinary team to promote safe mobility, functional independence, and overall physical well-being. Your expertise will help identify practical strategies that support individuals in their everyday environments while reducing the risk of injury and functional decline.

This is a consultative, hands-on role focused on developing realistic therapeutic recommendations that can be successfully incorporated into an individual's daily routine. You will assess mobility and positioning needs, recommend adaptive strategies and equipment, provide staff education, and develop practical interventions that Direct Support Professionals and residential teams can confidently carry over between visits.

Whether you're helping an individual maintain their ability to move safely throughout their home, supporting staff with proper positioning and transfer techniques, or identifying adaptations that promote greater independence, your expertise will directly contribute to safer and more meaningful daily living.

If you are a Physical Therapist who values collaboration, practical problem-solving, and helping individuals maintain their independence and quality of life, we invite you to bring your expertise to a team where your recommendations make an impact every day.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assess mobility, positioning, transfers, gait, balance, range of motion, strength, fall risk, and other functional needs as indicated.
  • Develop practical physical therapy recommendations, mobility guidelines, positioning plans, home exercise/functional maintenance programs, and other protocols for staff implementation.
  • Provide staff training and coaching on safe transfers, body mechanics, mobility assistance, positioning, fall prevention, use of adaptive equipment, and resident-specific protocols.
  • Develop and periodically review agency-wide clinical guidelines related to mobility, physical function, injury prevention, and safe use of equipment.
  • Run or assist with therapeutic groups focused on movement, mobility, balance, strength, healthy activity, and maintaining functional abilities.
  • Consult with nursing, residential staff, other clinicians, families/guardians, and outside rehabilitation providers to support continuity of care.
  • Identify needs for adaptive or durable medical equipment and provide recommendations for appropriate follow-up, repair, or replacement.
  • Observe residents in their natural environments and recommend practical changes that promote safety, independence, participation, and aging in place.
  • Document assessments, recommendations, training, protocols, and follow-up in accordance with agency requirements.
  • Refer residents for formal evaluation or ongoing skilled therapy when needs exceed the consultant role and collaborate with outside rehabilitation providers as appropriate.
  • Participate in clinical meetings or Human Rights Committee review when therapist expertise is needed.
  • As requested, accompany residents and staff during community-based physical activities, such as walking, exercise, swimming, or other recreational activities, to assess function, provide professional guidance, and promote safe participation.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited Physical Therapy program.
  • Current Rhode Island Physical Therapist license in good standing.
  • Experience with adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities, neurological conditions, aging, rehabilitation, or residential services preferred.
  • Ability to train non-clinical staff and translate therapy recommendations into clear, practical supports.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to AccessPoint RI program locations.
