JOB SUMMARY: The Independent Living Specialist is responsible for delivery of an array of independent living services, requested by persons with disabilities, to assist them in living independently in the community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
1. Provide Information and Referral Services
2. Provide Advocacy Services, both individual and systemic
3. Provide Peer Support Services
4. Provide Independent Living Skills Training Services
5. Provide Institutional Transition Services, and Youth Post-Secondary Transition Services
6. Provide Assistive Technology (AT) Services
7. Provide Community Impact Services such as outreach, education, systemic advocacy, and technical assistance
QUALIFICATIONS
· Bachelor or Associate Degree in a related field is preferred, as is a combination of education and experience in providing support to persons in facility or community settings which may be substituted for the college degree
· Experience assisting others with accomplishing goals is required
· Experience in the delivery of presentations and training for groups is required
· Ability to develop and implement effective skills training is required
· Ability to communicate effectively is required
· Ability to arrange own transportation is required
· Ability to use a computer, as well as operate office software, is required
· Knowledge of community resources is required
· Knowledge of service systems, and supports utilized by people with disabilities is required
· Knowledge of Assistive Technology and accessibility is preferred
· Knowledge of, and ability to utilize sign language is preferred
· Knowledge of fair housing laws and accessible and affordable housing options is preferred
· Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act is preferred
