Hand Surgeon (Orthopedic Hand Specialist)

The Hand Surgeon is responsible for evaluating, diagnosing, and treating conditions affecting the hand, wrist, forearm, and upper extremity. This physician will provide comprehensive surgical and non-surgical care to patients within a busy private orthopedic practice. The ideal candidate is fellowship-trained in Hand Surgery and committed to delivering exceptional patient outcomes, collaborating with multidisciplinary providers, and contributing to the growth and reputation of the practice.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care

  • Evaluate, diagnose, and manage a wide range of hand and upper extremity conditions, including: 
  • Fractures and traumatic injuries
  • Tendon and nerve disorders
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome and nerve compression syndromes
  • Arthritis and degenerative conditions
  • Congenital hand abnormalities
  • Sports-related injuries
  • Reconstructive and microsurgical cases
  • Develop individualized treatment plans utilizing both conservative and surgical interventions.
  • Perform office-based procedures and injections as appropriate.
  • Provide preoperative and postoperative patient care.
  • Take ortho/hand call at local hospital affiliates. 

Surgical Responsibilities

  • Perform elective and emergency hand and upper extremity surgeries in ambulatory surgery centers and hospital settings.
  • Utilize evidence-based surgical techniques to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate operative documentation and comply with all regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in call coverage as assigned.

Collaboration

  • Work closely with orthopedic surgeons, primary care providers, occupational therapists, physical therapists, physician assistants, and nursing staff.
  • Coordinate care with referring physicians and specialists.
  • Participate in case discussions and quality improvement initiatives.

Practice Development

  • Build and maintain referral relationships within the community.
  • Participate in marketing and business development activities as appropriate.
  • Contribute to patient satisfaction, retention, and practice growth.
  • Serve as a representative of the practice at professional and community events.

Administrative Duties

  • Complete medical records and documentation in a timely manner using the electronic medical record system.
  • Ensure compliance with practice policies, quality standards, and accreditation requirements.
  • Maintain required certifications, licenses, and continuing medical education (CME).

Qualifications

Required

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).
  • Completion of an accredited Orthopedic Surgery Residency.
  • Completion of an accredited Hand Surgery Fellowship.
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Orthopedic Surgery.
  • Eligible for state medical licensure and DEA registration.
  • Ability to obtain hospital and surgical center privileges.

Preferred

  • Board Certification with Subspecialty Certification in Surgery of the Hand.
  • Experience in private practice or high-volume orthopedic settings.
  • Interest or expertise in microsurgery, wrist reconstruction, or sports-related hand injuries.

  • Strong surgical and microsurgical skills.
  • Excellent communication and patient education abilities.
  • Commitment to high-quality, patient-centered care.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
