Position Summary: The surgical technician provides technical assistance to surgeons in order to provide surgical care to patients. The Surgical Technologist scrubs for the surgical procedures and performs a variety of other duties related to the preparations and maintenance of the operating room environment in collaboration with and under the direction of the nursing staff. Responsible for cleaning, decontamination, assembling and sterilizing all reusable supplies for patient care. They are also responsible for the storage of surgical instrumentation / equipment. Maintains inventory or necessary equipment and supplies, orders supplies and restocks work area as assigned, assuring the availability of needed supplies.
Essential Functions include but are not limited to:
- Demonstrates sound knowledge of surgical techniques, both routine and specialized, and performs in a professional manner. Applies this knowledge appropriately to develop and improve skills in assisting the surgeon and in the organization of work utilizing economy in time, motion and materials.
- Demonstrates competency with aseptic technique during surgery.
- Demonstrates ability to use all equipment and supplies necessary for surgical procedures.
- Develops and demonstrates initiative in order to inquire and explore new surgical procedures and subject relating to the operating room and to the surgical patient.
- Differentiates sterilization methods for special equipment and instruments necessary for specific surgical procedures.
- Demonstrates ability to retract, suction, irrigate, apply pressure and assist in homeostasis by use of assorted sponges in the surgical field under the direction of the surgeon.
- Demonstrates self-direction above and beyond daily assignments and actively offers assistance to colleagues both internally and externally.
- Demonstrates collegially behavior of respect and consideration with regard to work environment, i.e. restocking rooms, returning equipment/supplies for other surgical procedures, cleaning work areas/station and or communicate as appropriate.
- Identifies opportunities to improve performance within the unit and assists with the application of these opportunities.
- Demonstrates and applies principles and techniques of decontamination, disinfection and sterilization.
- Applies principles of infection control and cross-contamination.
- Responds appropriately in areas of risk, i.e. wears protective equipment, avoids cross contamination, immediately responds to unsatisfactory sterilization results, reprocesses when sterile integrity in doubt.
- Creates and maintains accurate records regarding inventories, instrument set content, sterilized goods and biological test results.
- Demonstrates skills to access resource information/personnel for decontamination and sterilization of all facility or loaner equipment processed through the CSR unit.
- Maintains all systems in place regarding quality control and accountability for sterilization processes.
- Demonstrates a working knowledge of all sterilization and disinfection equipment.
- As a professional, understands the concepts of customer service and acts accordingly, with grace under pressure.
- Attendance: works as scheduled and is compliant with Attendance and Tardiness Policy
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education & Qualifications:
- Graduated from an accredited Surgical Technology Program
- Active Surgical Technologist Certification (CST) required
- BCLS required
- 1-3 years of experience required
