The Project SOAR Program Director builds community and eliminates barriers to health and wellness for veterans living with disabilities through program facilitation and management.
The Project SOAR Program Director is directly responsible for the development, implementation, and management of quality, effective, mission-based sports, recreation and fitness opportunities for Veterans. The Program Director oversees the evaluation and improvement, marketing, and scheduling of the Project SOAR programming. Additionally, the position will provide support as needed to ACCESS Adventures, The Miracle League of Wilmington, ACCESS Fit, and other programming initiatives developed by ACCESS of Wilmington; supervision of interns; assistance with outreach and events; as well as other duties as assigned.
The SOAR Program Director is responsible for the training and daily supervision of the Project SOAR program team, program locations, facility and budget management, policy implementation, and overall safety of all participants, staff, and volunteers. The SOAR Program Director is responsible for developing and fostering relationships with community organizations to focus on program growth and outreach. Through this role, the SOAR Program Director will ultimately eliminate barriers to health and wellness for all participants, through building community with participants and their families, volunteers, staff, leadership, and stakeholders that always reflects ACCESS of Wilmington’s Six Core Values of RELATIONSHIPS, TRUST, QUALITY, INNOVATION, ACCEPTANCE, and ACCESSIBILITY.

Co-Supervises: Volunteers, Interns, Capstone and Practicum Students
Job Requirements:. Preferred Degree in Recreation Therapy (with LRT and CTRS status) or related field: Public Health, Exercise Science, Parks and Recreation. CPR, First-Aid, and AED certified. Experience working with veterans is preferred. Minimum 3-5 years experience required.

Requirements: The Project SOAR Program Director must have experience working with adults with physical and intellectual disabilities; supervising, including recruitment, training, and evaluation, of students and volunteer staff; as well as programming adapted sport and recreation for participants that celebrate and empower all abilities. Experience with veterans preferred. All staff must follow all ACCESS of Wilmington policies and procedures, as well as the code of conduct.

- Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in the area of recreation therapy, exercise science, sports administration and management, or a related field is required.
- Knowledge and passion for adaptive sports, recreation, and exercise. Minimum of three to five years of experience in the field is required.
- Exceptional leadership, communication, management and managerial skills.
- Experience managing a variety of complex programs and balancing numerous priorities efficiently and effectively.
- Experience in identifying, recruiting and managing program staff and volunteers.
- Charismatic, personable, and motivational leadership style, and someone who leads by example.
- Ability to work well independently and collaboratively with a team.
- A highly professional demeanor at all times.
- Proficiency in the use of a personal computer with multiple types of software programs and social media.
- Must be able to provide transportation, including the willingness to transport equipment within reason and lift equipment up to 50 pounds.
Work Schedule: The Program Director position is part-time, approximately 30 hours per week. Typical scheduled days are Monday-Friday. The Program Director must be able to work nights and weekends as needed for programming needs, as well as special events.
Location: The ACCESS of Wilmington office is located at 2021 Corporate Drive, Wilmington, NC, 28405. The Miracle Field is located at 5510 Olsen Park Lane, Wilmington, NC 28405. Off-Site programming in Wilmington and southeastern North Carolina is required, and out-of-state programming is possible.
Benefits: A $500 professional development budget is allocated annually. Paid holidays, vacation and sick leave. A Wellness Stipend of $100 is paid monthly on the last day of each month.
Recruitment Salary: $18-$22 per hour. Expected hiring range is $20 per hour with the possibility of higher pay for candidates with significant experience.
