Job Summary
We are looking for a meticulous and proactive Senior Cargo Claims Specialist to manage and resolve cargo claims for both import and export shipments. The ideal candidate will have an in-depth understanding of international trade regulations, carrier liability, and the legal frameworks governing freight loss and damage. You will be responsible for the entire claims lifecycle, from initial filing and investigation to negotiation and final settlement, ensuring compliance with company policies and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
- End-to-End Claims Management: Manage the entire claims process for both import and export shipments, including filing, acknowledgment, investigation, negotiation, and recovery.
- Investigation & Analysis: Conduct thorough investigations into claims of loss, damage, or delay. This includes reviewing documentation (BOL, POD, invoices, packing lists, photos), determining the root cause, and establishing liability.
- Liability Assessment: Apply knowledge of carrier tariffs, contracts, and international conventions (e.g., CMR, Hague-Visby Rules, Montreal Convention) to accurately assess carrier and company liability.
- Client Communication: Serve as the primary point of contact for clients regarding claim status, providing professional and empathetic communication, and setting clear expectations.
- Carrier & Insurance Liaison: Negotiate and correspond with carriers, underwriters, and insurance companies to secure claim recoveries and settlements in a timely manner.
- Data & Trend Analysis: Maintain accurate and detailed claim records in the company's database. Identify trends in claims data to report on root causes and recommend proactive loss prevention measures to operational teams.
- Compliance & Procedure: Ensure all claims are handled in strict compliance with company policies, TSA regulations (for air cargo), FMCSA regulations (for trucking), and other relevant national and international standards.
Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in cargo transportation, with demonstrable experience in both import and export operations.
- In-depth knowledge of incoterms (2020), bill of lading terms, and standard trading conditions.
- Strong understanding of liability principles under various modes of transport (Air, Ocean (FCL/LCL), Truck, Rail).
- Familiarity with international regulations such as the Carriage of Goods by Sea Act (COGSA), Warsaw/Montreal Convention, and CMR Convention.
- Proven experience in investigating, negotiating, and settling complex claims.
- Proficiency with logistics software (e.g., CargoWise, Magaya, etc.) and the Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
