The Attendance and Truancy Coordinator is responsible for overseeing and managing attendance compliance and truancy processes for online schools in the state of Ohio. This position ensures compliance with House Bill 410 and House Bill 409, along with state and local regulations governing student attendance and truancy. The coordinator will monitor attendance data, support intervention strategies, supervise Attendance Support Specialists, and collaborate with county agencies, parole officers, and internal stakeholders to promote student engagement and reduce chronic absenteeism.

This role is critical in supporting Ohio online schools' commitment to maintaining accurate attendance records, promoting student success, and ensuring compliance with all legal requirements related to truancy and absenteeism.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Supervise and support a team of Attendance Support Specialists
  • Monitor student attendance in accordance with House Bill 409 and House Bill 410
  • Maintain and update the HB 409 tracker for each participating online school
  • Run and analyze consecutive absence reports to identify students with excessive unexcused absences
  • Identify and process student withdrawals in compliance with the 72-hour rule
  • Communicate with county officials and juvenile courts to ensure proper truancy filing procedures are followed
  • Collaborate with parole officers to monitor attendance of court-involved students
  • Send withdrawal notifications to students' district of residence
  • Facilitate regular team meetings with direct reports and provide professional development
  • Attend state and community-sponsored trainings related to attendance and absenteeism interventions
  • Provide training and support to school staff on effective attendance practices and legal updates
  • Research, recommend, and help implement best practices in attendance intervention and engagement
  • Collaborate with EMIS Coordinators to ensure accurate reporting of attendance data to the Ohio Department of Education
  • Work closely with school leadership to evaluate and improve school-level attendance processes

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor's degree required (Education, Social Work, Public Administration, or related field preferred)
  • Prior experience in school attendance, truancy prevention, social services, or a similar role is strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of Ohio education laws and regulations, including HB 409 and HB 410
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities effectively
  • Ability to handle confidential information responsibly and with sound judgment
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout the state of Ohio, including attendance at truancy hearings and inter-agency meetings
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability and experience dealing with sensitive or emotional situations
  • Self-motivated with a dependable and professional work ethic
