We are seeking an Instrumentation Assistant with an engineering or biology background to join our team starting in August or September of 2026. The position will include end-to-end assistance with the Acbotics eDNA sampler product lines, including support for engineering development, sampler production, test and validation, documentation, field support and debugging. The Instrumentation Assistant will also work directly with customers on developing science applications of the sampler technology, interface with commercial analysis labs, and participate in sales activities such as trade booths. Strong written communication skills, interpersonal skills, computer skills including command line, and attention to detail required, background in either omics or marine engineering would be ideal. Job requires occasional travel, including for fieldwork and conferences.

Required qualifications

  • U.S. Citizen or permanent resident
  • B.S. in an engineering, physics or biology field
  • 1-3 years experience in marine technology or marine biology or significant project-based experience relevant to posting
  • Comfortable in, on and near the ocean (swimming, getting on/off boats)
  • Reliable and methodical
  • Strong demonstrated writing skills, and experience with reading and writing technical documentation WITHOUT use of AI
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills, with the ability to assess problems and identify solution independently
  • Demonstrated ability to work with interdisciplinary teams and/or customers
  • Interdisciplinary mindset
  • Python programming
  • Attention to detail and ability to develop and follow detailed test protocols and procedures
  • Experience working and debugging instrumentation via a variety of protocols
  • Ability to learn technical skills
  • Kindness and curiosity

Preferred qualifications

  • Linux user
  • Experience with data analysis and synthesis
  • Comfortable working with the command line
  • Familiarity with standard debugging tools and equipment, including oscilloscopes, multimeters, etc.
  • Experience on boats (scientific or otherwise)
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and mechanical drawings
  • Instrument deployment experience, including seagoing or shore field trials
  • Arduino or similar project experience
  • C programming
  • CAD

Physical requirements:

  • Must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 25 lbs on a regular basis; occasional lifting up to 50 lbs may be required during field deployments.
  • Work is moderately sedentary when in the office/lab, with extended periods of physical activity during field campaigns, including standing, bending, kneeling, and working at heights or on moving platforms
  • Must be comfortable working in outdoor marine environments, including exposure to sun, wind, cold, rain, and sea spray
  • Ability to board and work safely on small research vessels and offshore structures

Pay: $32.40 - $45.00 per hour
