General Description
We are seeking a compassionate patient advocate to help our patients navigate the complexities and obstacles of the healthcare system. Your responsibilities include informing patients of their rights, responding to patient’s queries or complaints, and resolving issues. A successful patient advocate should have a thorough understanding of the healthcare system, and the ability to research/investigate cases with an objective point of view.
Responsibilities & Duties
- Clarify options to patients on their choice for hospitals, doctors, and treatments.
- Create and deliver reports as requested by Administration, and the Health Board.
- Obtain information on behalf of patients by utilizing research/investigative techniques.
- Carry out patient requests, as appropriate.
- Solve conflicts and crisis situations with health care professionals and family members.
- Ensure that all patients’ rights are upheld.
- Continue follow up communication with both the patients and providers during an investigation.
- Apply HIPAA guidelines in every aspect of the patient investigation process.
- Complete all required continuing education.
- Request any HIPAA audits, or other pertinent data that applies to a patient investigation, with the authorization of Compliance.
- Collect patient questionnaires from all ASTHS locations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education Requirements and Qualifications
- High School Graduate or GED Equivalent.
- Experience in lieu of education may be considered on a year for year match.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must be reliable, detailed oriented, capable of multi-tasking with excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as strong professional customer-service interpersonal skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to relate well with co-workers and the general public.
- Ability to adjust to changing conditions.
- Must be proficient with computer applications (Windows operating systems- Microsoft Word, Excel).
- Listening skills to understand what the patients’ needs are and whether they have any problems or concerns.
- Problem-solving skills to solve possible patient problems with health care professionals and insurance companies.
- Decision-making skills so they can make choices on behalf of the patient.
- Communication skills to work with patients, family members and health care professionals for a variety of situations.
- Compassionate attitude in order to giver emotional support and help the patients’ quality of life.
- Must have a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License.
- Must be able to pass a background check and drug test
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Must be able to sit, stand, stoop, bend or kneel for long periods of time.
- Occasional bending or squatting may be necessary.
- Must have good manual dexterity and be able to tolerate repetitive motions.
- Must be able to effectively communicate verbally, and have good visual and hearing acuity.
- Frequent lifting (up to 15 lbs)
- Occasional lifting (up to 30 lbs)
