Position Summary: The Marching Band Percussion Instructor coordinates with the Director of Percussion for the musical and visual progression of the front ensemble and battery sections. This specialized role centers on teaching comprehensive percussion technique, cleaning complex rhythmic arrangements, implementing uniform marching/playing techniques, and integrating the section cohesively into the full ensemble field show. Depending on qualifications, the percussion instructor will work with one or a combination of: flat line, bass line, full drum dine, and front ensemble.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:
- Rehearsal Management: Run efficient percussion sectionals and sub-sectionals. Dissect and clean challenging music arrangements, address timing discrepancies, and ensure rhythmic and articulation precision.
- Visual Coordination: Instruct and refine percussion-specific marching techniques, instrument carriage, body choreography, drill execution, and stick/mallet height coordination as related to dynamics.
- Logistics & Maintenance: Assist the Director of Percussion in the regular tuning, maintenance, and repair of all percussion equipment. Oversee loading, transit, and field setup procedures at all events.
- Ensemble Integration: Coordinate closely with band staff to transition the percussion section seamlessly from isolated rehearsals into full-ensemble field run-throughs.
- Other duties as may be assigned by Band Director/ Principal.
