What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fine Gardener position at Abigail Gardens?
Abigail Gardens is looking to hire an enthusiastic and hard-working individual for the remainder of the 2026 season. Those who meet expectations for the season will be asked to stay on as a permanent member of the team.
Abigail Gardens is a residential gardening service, specializing in containers, annuals, perennials, and fine pruning. We dig, heave, lift, and carry for 8 hours a day, so candidates must be physically active and fit.
We place a high emphasis on staff members ability to think critically, problem solve, and empathize with customers wishes. Our ideal candidate enjoys being very detail-oriented, and doesn’t mind handling a sudden change of plans.

Typical job duties during warmer months include: tending to perennial and annual beds, deadheading, weeding, staking, watering, growing flowers from seed/tuber (such as zinnias, dahlias, sunflowers), and planting and maintaining containers.
Typical job duties during colder months include: pruning woody shrubs (hydrangea, buddleia, boxwood, etc.), cutting back herbaceous perennials, edging beds and spreading mulch.
Staff report to our headquarters each morning and drive work vehicles to all job sites.
At this time, we are only considering applicants who have either a). professional gardening experience b). several years of home/hobby gardening experience or c). farm or other outdoor work experience. Other requirements for crew members include:
- Excellent listening and communication skills
- A keen eye that will be able to differentiate between similar plant species
- Working cell phone
- Reliable transportation
- Good driving record
- OK with outdoor plumbing
