The Aberdeen-Springfield Canal Company (ASCC) is seeking capable, self-motivated individuals to fill Ditch Rider positions.
Under direct supervision of the ASCC Watermaster/O&M Manager, the Ditch Rider communicates with water users and regulates the flow and efficient delivery of irrigation water as requested from the water user. This position then transitions into a Maintenance position, under direct supervision of the O&M Manager, working with the normal maintenance team during the non-irrigation season. This position inspects and repairs canals, laterals, and ditches for leaks and spills, and mows and/or sprays canal banks for weeds. Working as a Ditch Rider and Maintenance worker is a full-time, year-round position.
· Drives Company-owned vehicle to assigned stretch of canal system, known as their “ride,” on a daily basis during water season to provide the water user with the correct amounts of water ordered.
· Provides maintenance, i.e., canal cleaning, weed (burning) and rodent control, fixing holes and breaches, locating and removing obstructions, and requesting assistance immediately, if needed.
· Operates, maintains, and repairs canals, waterways, pumps, irrigation systems, and facilities.
· Ensures the water delivery regulations of the Company and the state of Idaho are followed, including the non-delivery of unpaid accounts.
· Communicates with shareholder regarding water orders, problems, and suggestions.
· Patrols assigned area by foot and/or motor vehicle to detect leaks, breaks, weak areas, and/or obstructions along with any damage to irrigation system and canal roads.
· Keeps accurate records of all water use, especially when using water storage, complaints, and maintenance requirements.
· Closes and locks all headgates after water goes out of the system, and notifies supervisor of any maintenance or repairs needed prior to water delivery in the following spring.
· Helps with canal and vehicle maintenance and repair; builds structures; assists in canal repairs (manual or machine labor); installs headgates; and cleans canal system.
· During non-irrigation season, assists in maintaining or repairing canal system including, but not limited to, the following activities: Operating heavy equipment; hauling dirt or rock with trucks; installing headgates; building headgates, bridges, etc.; manual labor (including but not limited to digging and/or lifting); driving tractor/mower to mow weeds on canal banks; burning weeds/pulling weeds from canals; reporting major needed repairs to supervisor; and cleaning work areas.
· Assists with additional duties as assigned.
· Have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
· Able to operate a vehicle and/or machinery/equipment.
· Able to operate cell phone and iPad.
· Ability to transform a cell phone into a hot spot to connect to the Internet to transmit information.
· Basic math skills. Be able to add and subtract whole numbers and fractions, use these numbers on the Discharge Table to determine headgate opening dimensions to allow the correct flow of water as requested.
· Ability to read a tape measure accurately, measuring difference in heights of the water on a water delivery headgate, in ¼” or smaller increments to effectively use the Discharge table.
· Become familiar with the “Discharge Table for Submerged Orifice.”
· Ability to communicate effectively with shareholder/tenant, co-workers, and the general public.
One (1) or more of the following:
· Farming experience or related activity with canal/ditched irrigation methods.
· Farming or ranching work that provided knowledge of soil and water conservation practices and irrigation procedures.
· Construction, maintenance, or operating work that provided knowledge of the control, regulation, distribution, and measurement of water.
· Controlling, clearing, repairing, and maintaining irrigation ditches, canals, and equipment; or soil conservation or engineering technician work where the duties provided knowledge of irrigation procedures.
· Experience working with carpentry, engineering, fluid mechanics, electrical, concrete, and other mechanical engineering elements.
· High school diploma or equivalent.
· College course work or degree(s) in civil, electrical or mechanical engineering, applied sciences, agriculture, soil management or conservation, physical science, mathematics, range management or conservation, or other related discipline.
· Experience, education, and training, in any combination, are acceptable.
· Must have and maintain a current motor vehicle driver’s license.
· Must have and maintain an insurable driving record; and may be required to provide proof of current liability insurance meeting or exceeding state-required minimum coverage.
· Possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License, if needed.
· Farming experience or related activity where canal/ditch irrigation methods were used.
