What are the responsibilities and job description for the Head Coach position at Aberdeen Hardball Association?
The Post 24 Smittys Legion Head Coach is responsible for leading and organizing the Legion Baseball team. The Head Coach ensures that the team achieves success by monitoring their training, teaching them effective baseball techniques, creating new game plans, organizing, and running practices, and deciding lineups. This position is also in charge of coordinating with General Manager, Board Members and parents regarding the team's progress and concerns. The coach must also uphold the honor and dignity of the profession. In all personal contact with athletes, umpires, officials, administrators, state and national organizations, the media and the public, the coach shall strive to set an example of the highest ethical and moral conduct. Season is approximately mid-April through July.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach the baseball team about the fundamentals of baseball and any advanced baseball techniques they need to learn.
- Organize coaching, training, and game schedules and ensures that they will not interfere with the academic obligations of the players.
- In conjunction with the conditioning staff, develop an off-season conditioning and practice program that will enhance the progress of the players.
- Handle and solve internal conflicts and issues while creating and implementing disciplinary and safety rules for the team.
- Potentially assist in scheduling games
- Motivate players to improve their performance in both academic and extracurricular activities.
- Manage and maintain good relationships with the players, their parents, and the Post 24 Board.
- Oversee field care and maintenance
- Proactively ensure the proper use, care, cleaning and maintenance of all Post 24 facilities.
- Adhere to all rules, regulations and policies as mandated by the American Legion Association.
- Promote the sport with students, alumni, and members of the community.
- Provide guidance to all other coaches in the program.
- Hold an annual orientation for student athletes and their parents/guardians prior to the beginning of each sport season.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in physical education or any related field is preferred, but not required.
- 5 years of experience as a baseball coach/player at the high school/American Legion or college level is preferred, but not required.
- Has completed any levels of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) or USA Baseball Coaches Certification Program certifications is preferred.
- In-depth experience or knowledge of American Legion Baseball rules, regulations and strategies.
- Ability to effectively communicate with and serve all groups within Post 24 including coaches, board, parents, and players.
- Must present a professional image.
- Must pass all potential background checks.
- Must have clean driver’s license and willing to obtain CDL if needed.
- Must be able to maintain confidential information.
- Obtain certification in CPR and first aid training to respond to a participant's injuries.
