Overview
Abel Personnel is seeking a Software Systems Engineer to join a mission-focused defense team supporting critical national security objectives. This on-site position at the Lockheed Martin RMS Facility in Colorado Springs, CO, offers an opportunity to work at the forefront of systems design, software engineering, and mission system integration.
In this role, you’ll contribute to the full lifecycle of defense system development—from requirements analysis and modeling to system integration and performance optimization—using Agile methods and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) principles. You’ll be part of a collaborative, high-performance environment that values precision, innovation, and impact.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead or contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of software system requirements, architectures, and specifications.
- Collaborate with the Systems Engineering, Integration & Test (SEIT) organization to translate complex system requirements into detailed software-level solutions.
- Author and maintain technical documentation, including Interface Control Documents (ICDs), System Architecture Descriptions, CONOPS, Use Cases, and Trade Studies.
- Conduct system analysis, performance modeling, and algorithm development to ensure mission system reliability and scalability.
- Integrate software and system components within Agile development environments using DevSecOps best practices.
- Utilize industry-standard tools such as IBM DOORS, JIRA, Git, Confluence, Maven/Gradle, and Eclipse for development and configuration management.
- Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and system evaluations, contributing technical insight and engineering judgment.
- Partner with multidisciplinary teams, including software, hardware, and specialty engineers, to deliver cohesive, mission-ready solutions.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or related field with 5 years of experience, or Master’s degree with 3 years of experience.
- Active Secret Clearance (Final required prior to start).
- DoD 8570 IAT Level II Certification (e.g., CompTIA Security ) within 60 days of hire.
- Proven experience applying systems engineering principles to software development and integration.
- Hands-on development experience in Unix/Linux and/or Windows environments.
- Familiarity with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and system modeling tools.
- Experience working within Agile and DevSecOps frameworks.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing or supporting Command and Control (C2) or defense mission systems.
- Proficiency in SysML modeling, system design automation, and requirement traceability.
- Knowledge of virtualization, containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), and cloud-based architectures.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct trade studies, analysis of alternatives, and design evaluations.
- Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to clearly articulate technical solutions to diverse audiences.
