Job Summary:
The job will be located at ABC Coke in Tarrant, AL and will be in the coal and coke quality assurance laboratory. Applicant will report to the Manager of Quality Assurance.
Job Responsibilities:
The position will perform quality assurance testing on incoming coal and outgoing coke on a daily basis. The laboratory technician will also perform daily inspection of foundry coke in railcars and trucks. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:
- Perform proximate analysis on coal and coke (moisture, ash, volatile, fixed carbon, and sulfur) using both an automated LECO TGA and manual methods
- Perform oxidation analysis of coal
- Perform Giesler Plastometer analysis of coal
- Inspect railcars and trucks for quality assurance of foundry and industrial coke
- Operate test cupola under supervision of senior lab technician
- Supervise union samplemen to insure proper sampling and preparation procedures are followed on coal and coke
- Manage overtime and filling vacancies for union samplemen
- Data entry of quality information
- Following SOPs and work instructions
- Cross train in the wastewater analysis laboratory
- Maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment
Job requirements:
- Willing to work at heights and in an industrial environment
- Willing to work in hot and cold environments
- Willing to work day shift, six days a week, and occasionally work evenings and nights
- Able to wear and work in a respirator
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Basic understanding of laboratory procedures
- Associates degree in a scientific field preferred but not required
- Excellent communication skills required, applicant will interact with various departments
Experience:
- 3 years of coal laboratory experience preferred but not required
- Familiarity with Western Appalachia and Alabama metallurgical coal seams
Skills and Abilities:
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills
- Strong initiative and interpersonal skills
- Ability to climb, inspect, and sample rail cars
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs
- Basic proficiency with standard business software such as Microsoft Excel and Word
