POSITION SUMMARY:

The Assistant Director of Nutrition plays a vital role in supporting the Director of Nutritional Services in ensuring the effective operation of the school's food service program. This position involves overseeing food preparation, managing inventory, assisting with meeting National School Lunch Program (NSLP) requirements, and maintaining high standards for food safety and sanitation. The Assistant Director will also assist in managing staff, ensuring coverage during absences, and handling various administrative and operational tasks to maintain a smooth workflow within the department. This role also involves collaborating with school staff, parents, and the community to ensure that the food service program meets the needs of students. This is a 40-hour per week, 10-month per year, non-exempt hourly position.

WORK SCHEDULE:

  • Shift: 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM

  • Days: Monday – Friday (occasional weekends as needed for special events)

  • Snow Day, School Vacations, Holidays: This position is scheduled to work a modified School Year which includes pay for all School Vacations, Snow Days, and Holidays, but excludes Summer School Vacation.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the Director of Nutritional Services in ensuring all components and regulations of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) are met while adhering to safety standards and practices. 

  • Prepare and cook in large quantities, as needed, ensuring meals meet quality standards and are served on time. 

  • Understand and follow verbal and written instructions, and effectively plan, organize, multi-task, and prioritize to meet deadlines. 

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date information related to inventory, NOI/FFS, and all collaborative bidding items. 

  • Assist the Director of Nutritional Services in ensuring department coverage during employee absences. 

  • Attend meetings as assigned for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information necessary to perform job functions. 

  • Work collaboratively with the team to assist with miscellaneous tasks as needed. 

  • Evaluate situations involving staff, students, parents, and the public to determine appropriate actions and/or direct to the appropriate personnel for resolution. 

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Nutritional Services.

  • Minimum of ten (10) hours of Professional Standards Training is required by or before May 1st annually. 

  • Provide continuous professional feedback using observations, performance evaluations, and other coaching opportunities.

  • Adhere to all School policies in partnership with Human Resources and Executive Leadership, when necessary.


QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPECTATIONS:

  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) required.

  • Minimum of three years of experience in quantity food service production.

  • At least one year of supervisory experience is preferred.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Drive/Google Suite. 

  • Experience in school nutrition, food service, or a related field is highly desirable. 

  • Strong understanding of current food preparation methods, practices, and waivers due to COVID-19 regulations. 

  • Must be ServSafe certified within 6 months of the hire date if not already certified. 

  • Strong planning and project management skills, with the ability to maintain accurate records and manage multiple tasks effectively. 

  • Ability to perform technical tasks and adapt to changing job conditions by upgrading skills as necessary. 

  • Professional and friendly demeanor with the ability to build rapport with staff, students, and the community. 

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision using standardized practices and methods. 

  • High organizational skills and attention to detail. 

  • Ability to demonstrate patience, care, and empathy when interacting with others. 

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with a high degree of accuracy. 

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, exercising sound judgment and creativity. 

  • Flexibility in work hours/days to accommodate school building issues outside of regular hours. 

  • Ability to effectively work under pressure from the public, workload, and employees.
