Director of Nutrition Job Description


POSITION SUMMARY


The Director of Nutrition provides leadership and oversight of the District's food service program to ensure students have access to safe, nutritious, high-quality meals in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations. The Director is responsible for all aspects of nutrition services, including program administration, financial management, regulatory compliance, menu planning, procurement, staffing, customer service, and wellness initiatives. As the District's administrator for USDA Child Nutrition Programs, the Director collaborates with District leadership to support the educational mission of Abby Kelley Foster Charter Public School while promoting excellence, accountability, continuous improvement, and exceptional customer service. This is a full-time, exempt, 10-month position.


Leadership and Operations


Provide strategic leadership and oversight of all District nutrition services and food service operations.


Supervise meal preparation, service, sanitation, inventory, purchasing, and distribution.


Develop and improve operational procedures that enhance efficiency and service quality.


Ensure compliance with all USDA, DESE, state, and local regulations governing school nutrition programs.


Establish department goals, operational standards, and performance expectations.


Evaluate program effectiveness and implement continuous improvements.


Develop marketing and student engagement initiatives that increase participation in school meal programs.


Serve as an active member of the District Wellness Committee and support implementation of the District Wellness Policy.


Financial Management


Develop and manage the Nutrition Department budget.


Monitor revenues and expenditures to maintain a financially sustainable program.


Review and approve purchase orders, invoices, inventories, and purchasing activities.


Submit reimbursement claims, deposits, invoices, and financial reports accurately and on schedule.


Maintain financial and operational records to support audits and reimbursement requirements.


Nutrition Program Administration


Administer all USDA Child Nutrition Programs, including NSLP, SBP, CEP, Summer Food Service Program (when applicable), and other state and federally funded nutrition initiatives.


Develop menus that meet USDA nutrition standards while promoting healthy food choices and student satisfaction.


Review and process Free and Reduced-Price Meal applications.


Monitor meal counts, production records, point-of-sale systems, and required program documentation.


Prepare and submit monthly reimbursement claims and required state and federal reports.


Coordinate administrative reviews, compliance audits, and monitoring visits conducted by DESE and USDA.


Coordinate meal services for school events, summer programs, and District activities.


Communicate menus, nutrition information, special dietary accommodations, and program updates to students, families, and staff.


Personnel Management


Recruit, hire, train, supervise, schedule, and evaluate Nutrition Department staff.


Review attendance, timesheets, and payroll information.


Provide coaching and professional development opportunities.


Address performance concerns in collaboration with Human Resources.


Ensure compliance with District personnel policies, collective bargaining agreements, and employment laws.


Compliance and Safety


Ensure all kitchens operate in accordance with food safety, sanitation, and health regulations.


Maintain required certifications, including ServSafe and Massachusetts School Nutrition Director Certification.


Coordinate inspections and respond to findings from regulatory agencies.


Ensure all employees complete required USDA Professional Standards and Civil Rights training.


Maintain records required for state and federal compliance reviews and audits.


Coordinate special dietary accommodations in accordance with USDA regulations, ADA requirements, and physician documentation.


Monitor kitchen equipment and facilities in partnership with the Facilities Department to ensure safe and efficient operations.


Collaboration and Communication


Collaborate with administrators, staff, families, vendors, and community partners.


Represent the District at professional meetings, conferences, and workshops.


Stay informed of current trends, regulations, and best practices in school nutrition.


Conduct regular inspections of cafeterias and kitchens to ensure compliance with sanitation, safety, meal quality, and customer service standards.


Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.


Compensation and Benefits


Salary Range: $65,000-$80,000 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience.


Full-Time, Exempt, 10-month position. This position is not on a salary scale.
