JOB SUMMARY

The Director of Safety, Quality & ISO Compliance is responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving the company’s safety, quality, regulatory compliance, and ISO management systems within a corrugated sheet plant environment.

 

This position provides strategic and hands-on leadership to ensure the facility operates safely, consistently produces products that meet customer and company specifications, maintains compliance with applicable federal, state, and local requirements, and sustains ISO certification and related management-system requirements.

 

The Director partners closely with Operations, Maintenance, Sales, Customer Service, and senior leadership to build a culture of safety, quality, accountability, and continuous improvement.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ISO 9001 Quality Management System (QMS)

·      Serve as the primary administrator of Abbott-Action's ISO 9001 Quality Management System. 

·      Maintain and continuously improve the company's QMS documentation, procedures, and work instructions. 

·      Ensure ongoing compliance with all ISO 9001 requirements.

·      Plan, coordinate, and lead internal ISO audits. 

·      Prepare the organization for external surveillance and recertification audits. 

·      Manage corrective actions (CAPAs), preventive actions, and non-conformance investigations. 

·      Perform root cause analysis and implement sustainable corrective actions. 

·      Maintain document control procedures and ensure revision accuracy. 

·      Track quality metrics and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). 

·      Coordinate Management Review meetings and maintain required ISO records. 

·      Work closely with department managers to ensure quality objectives are being achieved.


Quality Assurance & Continuous Improvement

·      Develop and implement quality improvement initiatives throughout manufacturing operations. 

·      Monitor production quality through inspections, audits, and process verification. 

·      Analyze quality trends and recommend process improvements. 

·      Investigate customer complaints and internal quality issues. 

·      Coordinate corrective and preventive action activities. 

·      Create, revise, and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and quality documentation. 

·      Assist departments with developing standardized processes and best practices. 

·      Support Operational Excellence (OpEx) and continuous improvement initiatives. 

·      Drive a culture focused on quality, accountability, and customer satisfaction.


Manufacturing Support

·      Work closely with Production Managers and Supervisors to improve manufacturing processes. 

·      Support troubleshooting of production quality issues. 

·      Monitor manufacturing processes to ensure compliance with quality standards. 

·      Participate in production meetings and cross-functional improvement projects. 

·      Assist with new process implementation and validation activities. 

·      Promote consistency across corrugator, converting, shipping, and finishing operations.


Certification & Regulatory Compliance

·      Maintain compliance with: 

o   ISO 9001 

o   FSC® Chain of Custody 

o   SFI® Chain of Custody 

·      Maintain certification documentation and records. 

·      Coordinate third-party certification audits. 

·      Ensure procedures remain compliant with certification requirements. 

·      Assist departments with implementing certification-related process improvements.


Training & Documentation

·      Develop quality-related training materials. 

·      Train employees on ISO procedures, SOPs, quality expectations, and best practices. 

·      Assist with onboarding new employees on quality standards. 

·      Maintain training records and documentation.


Safety

·      Lead the plant’s safety program and promote a proactive, employee-driven safety culture.

·      Maintain compliance with applicable OSHA, state, and local safety and environmental requirements.

·      Develop, implement, and maintain safety policies, procedures, training, inspections, and corrective-action programs.

·      Conduct or coordinate regular safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments.

·      Investigate workplace incidents, near misses, injuries, and unsafe conditions; identify root causes and implement corrective actions.

·      Track safety performance metrics, including recordable incidents, lost-time incidents, near misses, corrective actions, and safety observations.

·      Coordinate required employee safety training, including machine safety, lockout/tagout, PPE, hazard communication, powered industrial trucks, ergonomics, emergency response, and other applicable topics.

·      Partner with Maintenance and Operations to ensure machine guarding, electrical safety, LOTO, and other critical safety controls are properly implemented.

·      Maintain emergency response, evacuation, fire prevention, and business-continuity procedures.

·      Support workers’ compensation management and coordinate with insurance carriers, occupational health providers, and outside safety professionals as appropriate.

·      Lead safety committee activities and encourage employee participation in hazard identification and prevention.

EDUCATION

·      Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Quality, Engineering, Manufacturing, Industrial Technology, or related field preferred.


EXPERIENCE

·      5 years of experience in Quality Assurance, Quality Systems, or Manufacturing Quality. 

·      Experience maintaining an ISO 9001 Quality Management System required. 

·      Experience leading internal and external ISO audits. 

·      Experience writing SOPs, work instructions, and controlled documentation. 

·      Manufacturing experience required. 

·      Corrugated packaging, printing, paper converting, or packaging industry experience preferred. 

·      Experience with FSC and/or SFI certification is a plus.


SKILLS

·      Thorough understanding of ISO 9001 requirements 

·      Internal auditing experience 

·      CAPA and Root Cause Analysis 

·      Document Control 

·      Quality Management Systems 

·      Continuous Improvement methodologies 

·      Excellent organizational skills 

·      Strong communication skills 

·      Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) 

·      Ability to work cross-functionally throughout the organization 

·      Strong analytical and problem-solving skills


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

·      ISO 9001 Internal Auditor certification 

·      ISO 9001 Lead Auditor certification 

·      Lean Manufacturing experience 

·      Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt 

·      Continuous Improvement experience 

·      Experience with ERP systems
