AARP’s Policy, Research and International Affairs leads the development and communication of AARP’s public policies and, research and insights on the issues that matter to people 50-plus. AARP’s policy team is looking for a law school intern to help analyze and develop public policies that form the foundation of AARP’s work to empower people age 50 and older to choose how they live as they age. Working with the Office of Policy Development & Integration (OPDI), you will participate in the policy integration process, researching and assessing public policies in the marketplace that intersect with our three issue areas: economic (savings/retirement security including workplace benefits, employment, and low-income assistance programs); health (Medicare, Medicaid, prescription drugs, long-term services and supports, and caregiving); and consumer (financial services, elder abuse prevention, utilities, livable communities, housing, and transportation,). You will also provide support, as needed, in the policy development process by researching and recommending policies across these three areas. This paid internship has an anticipated start date of June 2026 and will run through the end of the year. Responsibilities Conduct objective legal and policy analysis and research of major federal, state, and local issues related to issues in the health, economic, and consumer portfolios Write concise and well-reasoned memos, reports, and content for AARP’s online Policy Book as well as OPDI’s policy integration analysis of emerging policy and legal issues affecting consumers in the marketplace Gather, organize, and analyze policy input from stakeholders, including staff, volunteers, and members Support OPDI colleagues with other tasks, such as outreach and remote and in-person events Participate in team meetings and strategy discussions Qualifications Currently enrolled in a degree program at an accredited law school as a graduate or professional student and remain academically enrolled throughout the internship Must have experience in public policy and legal analysis, and strong writing abilities, including the ability to summarize complex topics succinctly and clearly Must be organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines Candidates must have excellent legal analysis, research, and writing skills, as well as attention to detail and the ability to work on multiple projects at once under staff supervision AARP will not sponsor an employment visa for this position at this time. Additional Requirements Regular and reliable job attendance Exhibit respect and understanding of others to maintain professional relationships Independent judgment in evaluation options to make sound decisions Home office environment with the ability to work effectively surrounded by moderate home environment noise Compensation and Benefits The hourly range is $18 for undergraduates, $21 for graduate students, and $28 for Ph.D. candidates. Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
