What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Affairs Specialist position at AAA Northern New England?
This Public Affairs Specialist will serve the Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont areas as a spokesperson and strategic communications leader responsible for developing and executing public relations, media relations, traffic safety, and advocacy programs. The role ensures AAA’s image and messaging are effectively communicated to the public, employees, media, and supporting the organization’s safety, advocacy, and government relations
What You Will Do:
Serve as a spokesperson for AAA in media interviews, public events / conferences, and with traffic safety advocates.
Help coordinate government relations activities, including tracking legislation, preparing policy materials, and engaging with policymakers.
Represent AAA in traffic safety and injury prevention committees, task forces, and coalitions.
Develop and promote strategic traffic safety programs, including AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety research and Club initiatives.
Prepare and make presentations and/or teach workshops on traffic safety topics.
Support and participate in community outreach efforts (e.g., teen/senior driver safety, child passenger safety, impaired/distracted driving prevention).
Assist to develop and oversee statewide strategic plans for public affairs and communications.
Help to develop external communications, including press releases, speeches, fact sheets, and talking points.
Measure and report on the effectiveness of community relations and media relations activities.
Advise management on public/media reactions to organizational decisions and initiatives.
Collaborate with staff and business line managers to secure media coverage for advocacy, products, and services.
Build and maintain relationships with law enforcement, government officials, transportation agencies, and community organizations to promote AAA initiatives and partnerships.
Monitor news media (print, broadcast, online) for stories impacting AAA or presenting opportunities for promotion.
Participate in internal committees and support employee engagement events.
Champion AAA’s legacy and ongoing commitment to traveler safety.
Ensure the AAA image is consistently and positively represented to all audiences.
What You Will Bring:
Experience in government relations, traffic safety, or public relations required.
Bachelor’s degree and or related field experience preferred.
Excellent presentation, public speaking, and written communication skills.
Advanced organizational and time management skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
Ability to build productive relationships across all levels of the organization.
Demonstrated success in advocacy, media relations, and public affairs.
Strong collaboration, initiative, and accountability.
Must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Proof of auto insurance required at the time of hire.
