Position Title: Program Support Specialist I – Overnight

Reports to: Program Manager Direct Reports: None Location: Pine City, MN

Schedule: 12:00 AM – 8:00 AM (Overnight Shift) Rotating schedule. Some weekends and holidays required.

Position Summary

A Place For You provides emergency shelter for single adults and resource connections for individuals and families experiencing or at risk of homelessness in East Central Minnesota. Program Support Specialists are essential frontline staff responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and supportive environment for all residents during all hours of operation.

The overnight Program Support Specialist (PSS I) is a direct-support position responsible for maintaining shelter safety, supervision, documentation, and facility oversight during overnight hours. This role ensures continuity of care, responds to overnight needs and emergencies, completes documentation, supports residents in a trauma-informed manner, and prepares the facility for the following day.

This position plays a critical role in maintaining a calm, secure environment during overnight hours while ensuring policies and procedures are followed consistently.

Key Responsibilities

Provide Overnight Supervision and Trauma-Informed Support

  • The shelter remains safe, secure, and stable throughout the overnight shift.
  • Residents experience respectful, compassionate, trauma-informed care during nighttime hours.
  • Overnight concerns, crises, or emergencies are addressed promptly and escalated appropriately.
  • Shelter expectations are consistently upheld.
  • Residents feel supported while maintaining a quiet and restorative environment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring resident activity and maintaining overnight security.
  • Responding to incidents, emergencies, or behavioral concerns.
  • Completing required safety checks throughout the shift.
  • Supporting residents with de-escalation and problem-solving as needed.

Maintain Accurate Documentation and Shift Communication

  • Overnight activities are clearly documented for continuity of care.
  • Day staff receive complete and accurate shift reports.
  • Intake updates, incidents, and resident interactions are recorded according to policy.
  • Confidentiality is maintained at all times.

Responsibilities include:

  • Completing detailed overnight shift reports.
  • Entering documentation into Apricot and other tracking systems.
  • Recording incidents, observations, and resident interactions accurately.
  • Communicating clearly with incoming staff at shift change.

Support Overnight Facility Safety and Operations

  • The shelter remains clean, organized, and secure during low-staff hours.
  • All entry points are monitored according to policy.
  • Facility needs are addressed promptly.

Responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring building security and secure entry procedures.
  • Ensuring common areas remain clean and safe during the shift.
  • Completing overnight cleaning tasks as assigned.
  • Checking supplies, restocking as needed, and reporting maintenance concerns.
  • Supporting donation handling according to established procedures (if applicable during shift).

Respond to Emergencies and Crisis Situations

  • Appropriate agencies are contacted when required.

Responsibilities include:

  • Following emergency protocols (medical, behavioral, safety-related).
  • Contacting emergency services or on-call leadership when necessary.

Contribute to Team Communication and Organizational Standards

Qualifications

  • Ability to work overnight shifts on a rotating schedule, including some weekends and holidays.
  • Strong ability to work independently during overnight hours.
  • Ability to remain alert and responsive throughout the shift.
  • General computer skills (email, documentation systems, data entry).
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting up to 35 pounds, bending, twisting, and climbing stairs.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.
  • At least 1 year of experience in human services, shelter operations, housing programs, security, healthcare, or related is required.

Compensation and Benefits

Hourly Wage:

  • $17.50 – $20.50 per hour based on education and experience
  • $1.00 shift differential for overnight (midnight to 8 a.m.)
