What You'll Do as a Medical Social Worker
As a Medical Social Worker, you help patients and families navigate the emotional, social, and practical challenges that accompany serious illness. Your responsibilities include:
- Assessing social and emotional factors affecting patient health
- Participating in the development of individualized plans of care
- Maintaining accurate clinical and progress notes
- Identifying and coordinating community resources to support patients and families
- Assisting with discharge planning
- Attending in‑service trainings as needed
- Consulting with interdisciplinary team members to ensure well‑rounded patient care
- Practicing infection control and following universal precautions
- Recognizing and reporting any signs of abuse in accordance with policy and law
- Assisting with office tasks and new‑staff orientation when needed
Your work helps ensure patients receive holistic, compassionate care that supports both their medical and emotional needs.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in social work from a CSWE‑accredited program
- At least 1 year of social work experience in a healthcare setting
- CPR certification or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- LCSW preferred, though multiple factors will be considered
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent organization, time management, and problem‑solving abilities
- Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations
- Friendly, compassionate demeanor and ability to work well independently and as part of a team
Work Schedule
