POSITION SUMMARY
The Technical Writer/Editor will develop, edit, and quality-review clear, accurate, accessible documentation and learning materials supporting training modernization. Working with instructional designers, subject matter experts, instructors, eLearning and multimedia specialists, and quality and accessibility personnel, this role will translate complex scientific, regulatory, technical, and procedural content into consistent, audience-appropriate materials. The writer-editor will support evaluation and modernization of existing courses and development of new courses by producing complete, publication-ready course material packages that comply with client requirements and project document-control practices.
DUTIES
- Write, substantively edit, copyedit, and proofread instructor guides, student guides and manuals, presentations, job aids, handouts, practice exercises, assessments, evaluation instruments, course reports, plans, meeting records, and other contract deliverables.
- Collaborate with instructional designers and regulatory, and program subject matter experts to organize complex source material and express it in clear, concise, accurate language appropriate for adult learners.
- Preserve technical meaning while improving structure, readability, terminology, grammar, punctuation, consistency, and instructional flow across classroom, virtual, hybrid, and digital materials.
- Verify that course content, captions, labels, references, procedures, exercises, answer keys, and assessment language are internally consistent and traceable to approved source materials, learning objectives, and SME validation.
- Apply project editorial standards, client Visual Identity requirements, approved templates, plain-language practices, and consistent naming, formatting, and citation conventions across each complete course materials package.
- Coordinate with Section 508 specialists to prepare accessible Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, PDF, and other electronic materials; address editorial and structural findings and support completion of required compliance checklists before submission.
- Edit eLearning scripts, storyboards, narration, on-screen text, interactions, knowledge checks, and supporting documentation for clarity, consistency, accessibility, and fidelity to approved technical content.
- Support course evaluation and redesign by reviewing legacy materials, identifying outdated, duplicative, unclear, incomplete, or inconsistent content, and contributing findings and recommendations to course evaluation reports and development plans.
- Participate in courseware reviews with stakeholders and internal team members; document decisions, reconcile comments, incorporate approved revisions, and confirm that reviewer feedback is fully dispositioned.
- Maintain disciplined file naming, version control, change records, source attribution, and document status so working files and final Government-owned deliverables remain current, reproducible, and easy to maintain.
- Conduct final editorial quality-control reviews before submission, including cross-document consistency checks for course titles, objectives, terminology, page references, links, answer keys, visual callouts, and required components.
- Prepare materials for paperless-first electronic delivery through client-approved Microsoft Office, PDF, SharePoint, shared-drive, or LMS workflows; do not create macro-enabled files.
- Protect client information and Government-furnished materials by using only approved tools and platforms and by complying with project security, privacy, records-management, copyright, and information-handling requirements.
- Manage multiple concurrent course and program-document assignments, meet accelerated review schedules, and adapt to client-directed changes in priorities, course sequencing, delivery format, or content.
- Perform other duties within the scope of the position and contract requirements
EDUCATION
Bachelor's degree in English, technical communication, journalism, communications, scientific or medical writing, education, or a closely related field is required; another degree may be considered when supported by directly relevant technical writing and editing experience.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- At least three years of professional experience in technical writing, substantive editing, copyediting, or publication-quality document development.
- Demonstrated ability to translate complex scientific, technical, regulatory, or procedural information into clear, concise, audience-appropriate content without compromising accuracy.
- Experience editing structured training or performance-support materials such as instructor guides, student manuals, presentations, job aids, exercises, assessments, eLearning scripts, or course evaluation documents.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, including styles, templates, tables, navigation, references, review tools, and document formatting; working proficiency with Adobe Acrobat or equivalent PDF tools.
- Strong command of English grammar, usage, punctuation, spelling, document organization, and editorial quality-control practices, with exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with instructional designers and subject matter experts, reconcile multiple reviewers' comments, ask precise content questions, and track revisions through approval.
- Working knowledge of Section 508 accessibility requirements and accessible document practices for Word, PowerPoint, and PDF materials.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments independently in a primarily remote, multidisciplinary federal delivery environment while meeting firm deadlines and changing priorities.
- Ability to obtain and maintain the security and system access approvals required for a Tier 2 Sensitive Moderate Risk position, including completion of required security, privacy, records-management, and role-based training.
- Authorization to work in the United States without current or future employer sponsorship.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience supporting federal agencies, particularly in a public health, regulatory, or similarly complex environment.
- Experience editing scientific training, standard operating procedures, regulatory guidance, technical reports, or competency-based curricula.
