Food Service: Cook - AJ West Elementary

8 hours per day, 180 days including holidays, on-going.

Position begins September 2, 2026

Primary Responsibilities/Duties:

• Plans and directs the preparation and serving of food programs in the assigned cafeteria/kitchen. Promote the school food program by preparing nutritious, appetizing means tailored to the tastes of the students.
• Supervises and participates in the preparation and serving of food.
• Supervises and participates in cleaning of kitchen and related areas.
• Directs sanitation procedures and maintains kitchen in clean and sanitary manner.
• Ensure that all equipment in the cafeteria/kitchen area is in safe working condition and notifies the appropriate person when repairs are needed.
• Maintains records on food and supplies received and used.
• Maintains accurate records and reports conforming to district, state and federal guidelines.
• Supervise, assign work, and train food service workers.
• Follow safety rules and regulations.
• Perform other activities and duties as assigned.

Education/Experience:

• High school diploma or G.E.D. Food preparation vocational training preferred.
• Three years experience in commercial/institutional/large scale food preparation required.

• Valid Washington State Food Handler’s Permit.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.
• Ability to write simple correspondence.
• Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
• Ability to add and subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, fractions and percentages.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.
• Ability to work in a friendly manner with co-workers and students.
• Knowledge and ability to effectively supervise kitchen in a positive and productive manner.
• Good organizational, management, and leadership skills.
• Ability to lift and move 50 pounds. Ability to perform job and communicate in a noise environment.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.
• Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
• Knowledge and experience in using standard recipes and ability to adjust recipes to different quantities.
• Knowledge and experience in sanitary guidelines and practices.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk and continuously required to stand.  The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job.  The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.  The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as milk crates, frozen foods, canned food, etc.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces.  The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with public and other workers.  The employee has direct responsibility for the safety, well-being and work output of others.  The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.  The employee has a greater than average risk of getting a minor injury such as a cut or burn while performing the duties of this job.

Salary : $25 - $32
