ASSISTANT OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF ART HISTORY

Maine College of Art & Design (MECA&D) is seeking candidates for a full-time position in Art History at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, beginning August 16, 2027.

POSITION SUMMARY AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The faculty member’s primary teaching will focus on the required courses of Art History Survey I & II, and Critical Approaches to Contemporary Art. In addition, the faculty member will be expected to develop and teach Art History electives in their areas of expertise. With that in mind, we welcome candidates with experience teaching courses addressing visual culture, contemporary art and design theory, Global Studies, and Media Studies. Full faculty at MECA&D teach six courses a year and serve on a minimum of two committees.

ABOUT THE ART HISTORY PROGRAM

This art history foundational sequence is a chronological survey of art history from the prehistoric period up to and including contemporary trends in art history and criticism. The three courses (AH101, AH102, and AH250) introduce students to key movements and themes in art history and prepare them for a deeper understanding of their chosen studio major. Students also learn art historical vocabulary and practice visual analysis through writing assignments and oral presentations. The courses address both traditional Western notions of art history as well as global and transnational perspectives and concerns.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Art History, in hand by August 1, 2027, and demonstrate a significant record of publishing and engagement in the field. As this is a teaching-focused institution, candidates must demonstrate excellence in undergraduate teaching, with experience in courses addressing visual culture, contemporary art and design theory, global studies, and media studies. Evidence of effective academic service, particularly in curriculum development, is desirable. Experience teaching art history within an art college environment is an asset but not required. Experience teaching courses addressing visual culture, contemporary art and design theory, Global Studies, and Media Studies is required.

ABOUT THE ACADEMIC STUDIES PROGRAM

The Academic Studies program prioritizes high-quality teaching dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive community within the classroom as well as the broader college environment. Academic Studies faculty at Maine College of Art & Design teach classes across the Liberal Arts to Studio majors pursuing the Bachelor of Fine Arts. The program also offers classes team-taught with studio faculty, and houses minors in Art History, Sustainable Ecosystems: Art & Design (SEAD), and Writing. Faculty in Academic Studies participate in student critiques, college-wide reviews at the end of each semester, and engage actively with the art and design work of students at the College.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation ranges from $60,000 to $72,000 based on experience and rank. Faculty’s full-time engagement with the College typically ranges from mid-August to mid-May. This position includes a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and retirement benefits.

Essential Functions and Work Environment

This position requires the ability to perform the essential functions of the role, with or without reasonable accommodation, in accordance with applicable federal and state law. The essential functions of this position include preparing and delivering in-person instruction in Art History; facilitating classroom discussions, critiques, presentations, and other learning activities; developing and evaluating assignments and student work; providing timely feedback and academic support to students; maintaining appropriate course records; communicating effectively with students, faculty, and staff; using standard classroom, presentation, and learning-management technologies; and participating in meetings, academic activities, and other responsibilities associated with faculty service and the educational mission of the College.

This position is primarily performed in classroom, office, and academic environments and requires regular interaction and communication with students, faculty, and staff. The role may involve extended periods of sitting or standing; moving throughout classrooms and campus facilities; viewing and presenting visual materials; operating computers and audiovisual equipment; and occasionally moving or positioning materials weighing up to 25 pounds. The position requires the ability to communicate and exchange information effectively in instructional and professional settings.
