What are the responsibilities and job description for the Service Manager - Outdoor Power Equipment Dealership position at A-1 Power Equipment?
Service Manager – Outdoor Power Equipment Dealership$50,000 base uncapped commission | $70,000 on-target earnings | Newburgh, IN
A-1 Power Equipment is a locally owned outdoor power equipment dealership serving Southern Indiana. We sell and service the equipment our customers depend on to get their work done, and our service department is at the heart of that promise. We're looking for a driven Service Manager to own our service department, run it well, and grow it.
This is not an order-taking job. You'll run the entire operation and actively build it — with an uncapped commission plan that pays you directly for the business you generate. If you see a customer list as an opportunity instead of just a database, and you'd rather be measured on results than clock hours, we want to talk.
Why this role is different
- You own it. Full control of the service department — the shop, the schedule, the customers, and the numbers.
- You're paid for what you produce. A real, uncapped commission plan rewards you for the service revenue you generate, the volume you move, and how many of our equipment buyers you bring back through the service door. Strong performers earn $70,000 , with no cap on the upside.
- Your work shows up fast. A small, focused team where what you do moves the needle immediately — no big-company red tape.
What you'll own
- Grow the business. Proactively generate service work from our existing customers and bring in new business — seasonal campaigns (spring tune-ups, fall/winter prep), service reminders, declined-work follow-up, and reactivating past customers.
- Turn buyers into service customers. Get the people who buy equipment from us coming back for their service and maintenance — a core focus of this role, and one the commission plan rewards directly.
- Run the department. Write estimates, schedule shop work, and keep repairs moving efficiently and on time.
- Own the customer experience. Call customers on estimates and completed repairs, give proactive status updates, and get ahead of problems before they escalate — and handle the tough ones directly and professionally.
- Manage the details. Coordinate pickup and delivery, and handle warranty claims and filing accurately and on time.
- Lead the shop. Keep technicians productive and accountable for turnaround and quality.
- Support customers at the counter and on the phone.
Who you are
- A self-starter who takes ownership — you stay on top of the work and don't let things slip.
- Confident with customers — you're comfortable picking up the phone, and you can turn an unhappy customer into a loyal one.
- A revenue generator — you have a track record of growing service business or a customer base, and you can talk specifics.
- Accountable — when something goes wrong, you own it and fix it.
- Organized and process-driven — you use systems and follow-up so nothing falls through the cracks.
What you'll need
- Experience managing a service department, or as a lead service advisor/writer ready to step up — in outdoor power equipment, agriculture, powersports, marine, automotive, truck, or a related field.
- Comfort with a dealer management system and with warranty/claims processes.
- Strong communication skills, in person and on the phone.
- A valid driver's license.
- Ability to work in a shop environment and lift up to 50 lbs as needed.
Compensation & benefits
- $50,000 base salary uncapped commission.
- On-target earnings of $70,000 , with no cap for top performers — commission pays on the service business you generate, the volume you move, and the equipment buyers you convert into service customers.
- Paid time off (PTO).
- Employee pricing on equipment, parts, and accessories.
- Full-time, Monday–Friday, with a rotating Saturday schedule.
