What are the responsibilities and job description for the Probation Officer position at 95B District Court-Dickinson County?
Conduct pre-sentence interviews and background investigations to assist in determining most appropriate sentence and/or needed treatment. Make formal recommendations to the District Court Judge as to case disposition, assist in maintaining a caseload of probationers monitoring actions/behavior for conformity to terms of probation. Initiate corrective actions in case of non-compliance, refer to community agencies, set up community service, and provide general counseling and guidance. Must perform all related duties as required. Act as Specialty Courts coordinator performing all duties necessary and involving the Specialty Courts at District Court.
Examples of Duties:
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties: (These examples do not include all of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform.)
1. Conduct pre-sentence interviews and perform investigations into probationers’ background/history. Provide written recommendations and case summaries to the Court as required.
2. Participate in pre-sentence conference to assist in establishing most appropriate sentence in view of attitude, background, and likelihood of recurrent behavior. Make recommendations in courtroom at sentencing hearings, if necessary.
3. Monitor a caseload of individuals under court ordered supervision, arrange appointments, and follow up and monitor individuals’ conformance to court orders. Counsel probationers as necessary to bring into compliance.
4. Maintain files and computer system and regularly enter progress updates on all assigned cases.
5. Develop payment plans for fines, costs, and restitution and enforce payment orders.
6. Issue probation violation petitions and show cause petitions for probationers who violate probation or who are otherwise non-compliant.
7. Testify at related hearings in court.
8. Receive and share case direction and information with the District Court Judge.
9. Confer and consult with a variety of law enforcement personnel, prosecutors, attorneys, victims, and service agencies.
10. Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and requirements.
11. Research/analyze conditions and terms of grant programs, prepare grant applications, and comply with any necessary grant requirements, reports, etc.
12. Specialty Courts Coordinator as required: case management supervision, data entry and analysis, drug testing, grant writing, all tasks as needed.
13. Administer drug and alcohol testing to probationers following established protocols.
14. Perform numerous other job-related duties as required.
15. Perform on-call duties as required.
Qualifications:
All of the following functions and qualifications or their equivalents are essential for this position:
1. Considerable knowledge of criminal law, and the laws and regulations pertaining to the District Court.
2. Ability to relate well with a variety of people.
3. Ability to work effectively with the general public and fellow employees.
4. Ability to see, hear, and speak effectively and without limitations.
5. Ability to reason and process numbers effectively.
6. A valid driver’s license.
7. Must be willing to attend relevant training programs.
8. A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, sociology, psychology, or related fields along with two years of relevant experience is preferred. However, a candidate with a significant combination of relevant education, training, and experience may also be considered.
9. Must be able to pass a background check and drug screen.
10. Will be subject to any other terms or conditions required for employment as required by Dickinson County.
