Estimated Appointment End Date (Continuous if Blank) Full/Part-Time Full time Job Type Regular Compensation Monthly/Annual Salary: Monthly Annual Level II (Pay Band J) $4,033.33 $48,400.00 Level III (Pay Band K) $4,541.57 $54,498.88 Job Description Basic Purpose Positions in this job family are responsible for researching, writing and editing various materials for media, and presenting information for a state agency. Typical Functions •Establishes, develops and maintains contact with media, professional and civic organizations and other special interest groups to promote agency programs. •Prepares, edits, coordinates and distributes news releases. •Prepares speeches, agency newsletters, brochures, web pages, broadcast scripts and other agency informational releases; coordinates major public relations or advertising campaigns for the agency. •Develops special educational and promotional materials for presentation at exhibits, fairs, festivals, conferences and schools; conducts tours of agency. •Represents agency at civic and professional groups. •Instructs, trains and may supervise the activities of others. •Serves as photographer for an agency. •Serves as project leader for special PR projects of an agency Level Descriptor Level II - This is the specialist level where incumbents are responsible for serving as a project manager or for performing advanced specialized duties such as consulting, desktop publishing, editing internal publications, or training. Level III - This is the leadership level where incumbents will have oversight of day-to-day operations and will provide supervision to other staff or serve as lead worker and will assist with developing budgets and planning activities. Education and Experience Level II - Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a bachelor's degree in journalism, communication, marketing, English or a related field plus one year of experience in writing and editing, radio and/or television, public relations or serving as a public information officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience and one year of experience in writing and editing, radio and/or television, public relations or serving as a public information officer. Level III - Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a bachelor's degree in journalism, communication, marketing, English or a related field plus two years of experience in writing and editing, radio and/or television, public relations or serving as a public information officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience and two years of experience in writing and editing, radio and/or television, public relations or serving as a public information officer. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies Level II - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include advanced knowledge of English usage, including grammar and composition; of public relations principles and techniques; of accepted styles for materials released to various media; of media sources and their capabilities; of visual graphics and video techniques; of agency's objectives; of editing techniques and procedures; of graphic terminology and techniques; and of training principles and practices. Ability is required to write and edit; to gather and organize pertinent data; to uphold and practice public relations principles and codes of ethics; to deliver informational presentations; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; and to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Level III - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include advanced knowledge of English usage, including grammar and composition; of public relations principles and techniques; of accepted styles for materials released to various media; of media sources and their capabilities; of visual graphics and video techniques; of agency's objectives; of editing techniques and procedures; of graphic terminology and techniques; of training principles and practices; and of supervisory principles and practices. Special Requirements Some positions may require that applicants be willing and able to fulfill job-related travel normally associated with this position. Additional Job Description Position may be filled at Level II or III. Position is located in the Division of Services for the Blind and Physically Impaired - Oklahoma Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (SBVI72). Essential Functions: The Public Information Officer (PIO) will market the Oklahoma Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (OLBPH), a statewide library service governed by the Library of Congress’ National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled program. The PIO will travel extensively (day trips and overnight stays) throughout Oklahoma recruiting eligible patrons. Marketing includes exhibiting and speaking at state, civic, faith-based, and other community conference venues. The PIO will provide in-service training at public libraries, senior care and medical facilities, and educational entities. PIO will also make cold call visits to spread public awareness. Library PIO along with DRS communications unit will utilize social media to enhance outreach efforts. PIO coordinates activities with the Library Programs Manager. The PIO is the Editor-in-Chief of the OLBPH’s quarterly newsletter “Bright Future”. This newsletter is a compilation of recommended reads from librarians, various other library program features, and other information contributed by agency blindness professionals. “Bright Future” is published in various accessible formats including braille and audio recording. Preference may be given to applicants with a journalism or related degree. Applicants must be willing to perform all job-related travel. Trial period (if applicable) is required.
