Job Description “Depending upon the desired qualifications of the successful applicant, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at a higher level within the job hierarchy” Radiation Protection Technician I or Radiation Protection Technician II Summary The Nuclear Radiation Protection Technician supports and performs duties associated with laboratory analyses in support of the fleet radiological environmental management programs (REMP) and Radiological Effluent Control Program (RECP). The Nuclear Radiation Protection Technician will perform various plant and environmental sample preparations for radiochemical analyses for gross alpha/beta, tritium, gamma, Sr-89/90, Fe-55, and Ni-63. Instrumentation includes, but is not limited to, gas flow proportional counters, liquid scintillation counters, and gamma spectroscopy. Duties and Responsibilities: Performs duties to ensure that plant and environmental samples are prepared and analyzed in a timely and quality manner in support of the fleet radiological environmental management programs (REMP) and Radiological Effluent Control Program (RECP) Successfully complete Radiation Worker training to support work in Radiological Control Areas May be asked to support nuclear fleet emergency response activities including, but not limited to, analyses of post-accident environmental samples Basic / Required Qualifications Radiation Protection Technician I High School Diploma or Equivalent (e.g. GED) Radiation Protection Technician II Two year degree (Associate of Science) in radiation protection, or nuclear navy training, or equivalent education or training programs. A minimum of three years of experience in lieu of a degree Two years of experience in a radiation protection, chemistry or computer science career Desired Qualifications: Five (5) years of experience in a chemistry and/or radiation protection Aptitude for math and science as demonstrated by educational performance Demonstrated ability/education to work in a scientific setting with experience in radio analytical separations and radio analytical instrumentation (gas flow proportional counters, liquid scintillation counters, and gamma spectroscopy) 4 year degree (Bachelor of Science) in chemistry, radiation protection, or similar Demonstrated ability to work accurately from detailed procedures Demonstrated experience with Microsoft products with strong skills in Excel and Word Demonstrated ability with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) or similar databases Ability to communicate effectively with personnel at all levels in a technical environment Specific Requirements: Willing to relocate to within 75 minutes of nuclear plant in order to meet requirements of Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty. Must obtain Nuclear Unescorted Access Authorization Respiratory physical Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds Ability to meet RP essential job functions (climbing, lifting, pushing, pulling, ability to wear protective equipment, etc.) This role requires the use of weight rated equipment, with max ratings ranging from 275lbs to 325lbs, in order to meet the essential functions of the job.
