Function
This person is responsible for the daily operation, monitoring, and maintenance of a small NYWEA Category 1 municipal facility that utilizes single-pass gravel filtration, followed by supplemental chlorine treatment of effluent as required to meet standards. The Operator ensures compliance with environmental regulation and maintains optimal plant performance through routine inspections, process adjustments, and equipment maintenance.
Responsibilities
- Take and test water samples. Report findings to D.E.C. on a monthly basis.
- Inspect gravel filter beds (3 pairs). Monitor flow distribution over whichever pair is currently in use.
- Ensure readiness of idle beds by raking, weeding, removing scum, and covering as necessary.
- Inspect and regulate pumps, valves, screens, and similar equipment.
- Regulate flow of chlorine in accordance with D.E.C. guidelines.
- Perform routine maintenance.
- Develop a plan for regular preventive maintenance.
- Engage outside contractors as necessary for major repairs and/or maintenance.
- Represent the Village in negotiating, evaluating, and approving outside contractors' proposals and/or performance.
- Respond to alarms. Troubleshoot and coordinate with supervisors for corrective action.
- Maintain accurate records of plant operations, maintenance, and laboratory results.
Scope
This is a part-time opportunity, ordinarily involving 7 to 10 hours per week (October through March.) During warmer weather, hours may increase as a result of weed growth in gravel beds.
The Village is able to hire part-time help for tasks like raking and weeding.
Starting Date
Whenever the Village Board approves a qualified person.
