Job Purpose Statement

The teacher is the primary instructional delivery person in the classroom. The teacher instructs professional technical education classes in agricultural sciences. The teacher supervises student activities related so that students develop the skills, knowledge, and attitudes related to employment in agricultural occupations. Student achievement and growth are primarily dependent on the work and efforts of the classroom teacher. The position is demanding, varied and complex. The teacher must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be well trained in content knowledge and teaching strategies.

 

The ideal applicant will not only be a teacher of Agricultural Technology, Metals, Wood Fabrication combined with Science and Math teaching experience at the Secondary level.  The candidate must also be passionate about collaborating with school and district colleagues, and creating strong ties with the community. 

 

The teacher will plan, organize, and implement an appropriate instructional program as designated by the Hood River County School District in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential.

  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other related duties may be assigned. 

  • Provide safe, supportive and effective classroom management for students.
  • Plan effective and appropriate daily lessons and unit plans incorporating industry as well as school wide initiatives (i.e. reading and writing across the curriculum).
  • Develop, implement and maintain a system to track and maintain tools and equipment (loss prevention and continued maintenance).
  • Maintain a budget with a positive balance and maintain and turn in all associated records in a timely manner.
  • Establish and maintain a robust and energetic advisory committee and meet with them no less than once per term.
  • Attend all required meetings.
  • Effectively collaborate with CTE instructor team.
  • Attend regional, state and national student competitions.
  • Teach occupational knowledge and skills in the areas of safety, machine processes, metal fabrication, welding, heat treating, cutting, communications, career preparation, and agricultural science.
  • Cooperate with other team members in promoting activities of a FFA chapter or like group. Serve as an FFA Advisor, hold chapter meetings, coordinate student competitions and community events.
  • Co-assist in organizing and maintaining an active manufacturing technology and/or agricultural sciences advisory committee(s).
  • Oversee and maintain on site greenhouse, land laboratory, and agriculture shops.
  • Coordinate the placement, supervision, and evaluation of students on internship and cooperative work experience sites as assigned.
  • Match activities and materials to individual and group skills and needs.
  • Design or selects and uses planned sequences of instruction for the development of occupational skills and knowledge.
  • Ensure that instructional activities and materials are clearly related to District, school, program, and course goals and objectives.
  • Provide instruction based on designated instructional materials or develops alternate materials in prescribed District format.
  • Establishes and maintains a safe, orderly and supportive classroom and laboratory environment in which students are actively participating and show respect for one another and for the teacher.
  • Maximizes time when students are paying attention and working on tasks directly related to the subject matter.
  • Conducts interesting and well-paced classes using a variety of instructional techniques, strategies, and materials appropriate to the lesson.
  • Makes sure students understand what to do before undertaking assignments.
  • Assesses, keeps track of, and provides feedback promptly and often to students on their progress and assignments.
  • Uses a grading system that is consistent, fair, and supportable, and that aligns with building and district philosophy.
  • Selects and requisitions required instructional equipment, supplies, and materials.
  • Ensures that materials and equipment are properly used, maintained and stored, and that inventory records are accurate and current.
  • Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities as assigned.
  • Supervise SAE projects and experience with livestock fairs and shows.
  • Participates cooperatively in school, area, and district-wide activities.
  • Follows specified standards, policies, and procedures of the building and District.
  • Actively participates with District Perkins Alliance.
  • Actively partners with local Community College to create seamless transitions for students.
  • Be a reflective practitioner committed to continuous improvement.
  • Comply with applicable District, state, local and federal laws, rules and regulations.
  • Adheres to all standards established by Teachers Standards and Practices Commissions for Competent and Ethical Educator.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance to meet the needs of the students and the expectations of the District. 

Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Demonstrated ability to successfully work with adolescent students and public.
  • Ability to communicate fluently verbally and in writing in English. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, parents, staff or members of the community. Ability to draft simple correspondence and some routine reports. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to proficiently use the following programs strongly preferred: Synergy, MS Word & Excel and Google Suite Apps. Ability to type accurately and proficiently.
  • Ability to appropriately communicate with students, teachers, parents, members of the community and others including vendors, law enforcement and other agencies.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and work in an environment with constant interruptions.
  • Valid Driver License and ability to obtain a valid CPR/First Aid card.
  • Skills to motivate students, communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, direct support personnel, evaluate performance. 
  • Knowledge of age appropriate teaching methods, state curriculum framework, education code, appropriate instructional subjects. 
  • Abilities to stand and walk for prolonged periods, perform a variety of specialized and responsible tasks, maintain records, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, other school personnel, meet schedule and deadlines.  Significant physical abilities include lifting/carrying, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity/depth perception/accommodation/ field of vision.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree required; Master's Degree preferred.
  • Manufacturing experience.
  • Possesses or have the ability to readily obtain an Oregon Teaching license with CTE Endorsement or Industry Certification.  

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school teaching experience is preferred.
  • Endorsements in Science and Mathematics are preferred. 
  • Substantial industry experience is preferred.  
  • Experience with using a variety of different instructional strategies is preferred. 
  • Experience working with English Language Learners is preferred.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish skills preferred.
  • Valid driver's license. 

Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required:

  • Currently hold or have the ability to obtain and maintain a TSPC Teaching License with a CTE endorsement or industry certification. Endorsements in Science and Mathematics are preferred.
