What are the responsibilities and job description for the Project Engineer — 509 Electric Inc position at 509 Electric?
Project Engineer — 509 Electric LLC
509 Electric is a licensed Washington State electrical contractor serving Yakima, the Yakima Valley, the Tri-Cities, and Eastern Washington. We self-perform electrical scope on public works projects — water and wastewater facilities, municipal and school district work, industrial process and refrigeration.
We're a small, hands-on company. Our jobs are technically demanding and the documentation that comes with public works is relentless. We're hiring a Project Engineer to own that documentation and work directly alongside the owner/Project Manager.
This is a real seat, not a filing job. You'll be the person who knows where every submittal, RFI, and change order stands, and the GC and engineer will be calling you for answers.
What you'll do
- Prepare, log, and track submittals — assemble product data and shop drawings from vendors, route to the GC and engineer, chase approvals, and keep the submittal register current
- Write and track RFIs — draft clear questions from the plans and specs, log them, distribute responses to the field, and follow up when answers stall
- Support change orders — assemble pricing backup, track T&M tickets, and keep the pending/approved log accurate
- Handle material procurement — request vendor quotes, issue purchase orders, expedite deliveries, and track long-lead gear (switchgear, transformers, VFDs) against the schedule
- Manage project documentation — Buy America/AIS documentation, O&M manuals, as-builts, warranty letters, and closeout packages
- Assist the Project Manager — meeting notes, schedule updates, job cost tracking, subcontractor and vendor coordination, and general day-to-day project support
What we're looking for
- Genuinely organized. You track open items and close them out without being reminded.
- Strong written communication — RFIs and submittal transmittals have to be clear the first time
- Comfortable reading construction plans and specifications, or eager to learn fast
- Solid with Excel, Outlook, and PDF markup tools (Bluebeam or similar)
- Able to work independently and juggle several active projects at once
- Willing to travel to jobsites across the Yakima Valley and Tri-Cities as projects require
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record
Nice to have (not required)
- Experience with electrical, mechanical, or heavy civil construction
- Familiarity with public works construction and its documentation requirements
- Experience with construction document platforms (Procore, SharePoint, or similar)
- Coursework or a degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field
- Any electrical field experience — an electrician looking to move into the office would be a strong fit
