Description

GENERAL INTRODUCTION:

The Archbishop, visible principle of unity in his archdiocese, is called to build up the particular Church unceasingly in the communion of all its members, and to ensure that their diverse gifts and ministries, in union with the universal Church, serve to build up all the faithful and to spread the Gospel. (Apostolorum Successores 8).  He must take care that all the affairs which belong to the administration of the whole archdiocese are duly coordinated and are ordered to attain more suitably the good of the portion of the people of God entrusted to him.” (Apostolorum Successores 177).

 

Each position employed in the Chancery helps to extend the ministry of the Archbishop in particular ways as outlined in the position description.

 

GENERAL SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL PURPOSE:

Ensures the development, organization and implementation of all athletic ministry programming within the Office of Pastoral Ministries in accord with the goals, policies and mission of the Office, as well as the mission and norms of the local and universal Church.

 

NOTE:  This is an appointed position by the Ordinary of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle and subject to Archdiocesan Policy pertaining to appointed positions.  The supervisor of this position reserves the right to make necessary modifications to this position to reflect current and appropriate responsibilities.

 

ESSENTIAL POSITION DUTIES:

 

  1. Collaborates with Chancery staff in planning, implementing and evaluating CYO Athletic programs and services.  Serves as a professional resource in the areas of athletics.  Maintains a current level of knowledge and skills required to effectively serve as Director of CYO Athletics.  Participates in local, regional and national athletic associations, programs and educational activities. 
  2. Responsible for the timely and effective communication of information about the CYO Athletic Program with leadership, participants and the general public and collection of information from the same through use of emails, e-letters, website, updates and social media presence. 
  3. Establishes goals and objectives that are compatible with the mission of the Archdiocese of Seattle, ensuring high quality programming for CYO Athletics.
  4.  Ensures the formation, development and training of qualified coaches by setting standards and offering formation programs.  Research, training, clinics and consultations are facilitated in person by the Director of CYO Athletics or other CYO staff and volunteers. 
  5. Establishes parish or school athletic associations headed by a Parish or School Athletic Director.  Serves as a resource to these Athletic Associations which have the responsibility to adequately screen prospective coaches as mandated by the Archdiocese.  Acts as a resource to associations dealing with parent education and conflict resolution.
  6. Oversees and directs, in consultation with sports committees, the planning, organizing and scheduling of post season events (Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, Baseball), recognitions as well as oversees Cross Country and Track and field programs/events.  This involves participating in meetings, communicating with Athletic Directors and the commission for each sport as well as coordinating and ordering awards (trophies, medals, t-shirts, ribbons).  This is done in collaboration with CYO Athletics staff.
  7. Organizes commissions, recruits volunteer commissioners for each sport, oversees program implementation which includes volunteer recruitment, coordination and support during selected events.  Ensures proper written and verbal evaluation of programs through the commissioners, coaches, parents, and athletes at various times to ensure that all programs are maintained and updated to stay current with trends in youth sports and the Church in Western Washington.
  8. Responsible for facility procurement and inventory by serving as CYO Athletics representative to parks and recreation departments, parishes, schools and other organizations.  Participates in meetings to advocate for the facility needs of the community as well as to collaborate and be resource to the larger community of users.  Liaison for CYO Athletics in regards to archdiocesan Office of Property and Construction, Friends of Athletic Fields and other appropriate entities in this regard. 
  9. Ensures effective stewardship of resources through oversight of the budget for CYO Athletics and office administration in accordance with Archdiocesan policy. Provides supervision and support to the staff of CYO Athletics, including team development, formation and program implementation. 

Qualifications


ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Primary

  1. Willingness and ability to support the mission of the Church by extending the ministry of the Archbishop.
  2. Ability and desire to use God-given gifts and talents in service of the local Church in support of the collaboration between lay and ordained Ministers.
  3. Active member of a parish/faith community in good standing with the Church.

 

Education:

  1. BA degree or relevant experience in a related field.

 

Experience:

  1. Five years demonstrated successful leadership/management experience to include staff supervision, program management and budget management.
  2. Knowledge of and experience in youth sports/athletics and/or retreats.
  3. Knowledge of and experience in fundraising and/or development-related activities.
  4. Demonstrated successful experience working with people with various economic, racial and cultural backgrounds.
  5. Knowledge of and/or experience in staffing boards, committees and other leadership groups.
  6. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Word, Excel and Outlook)

 

Other Elements:

  1. Excellent communications skills both verbal and written.
  2. Strong demonstrated competence in interpersonal and public relations skills including the ability to work collaboratively with Chancery staff, school personnel, pastors and parish ministers.
  3. Ability to work on evenings and weekends.
  4. Ability to provide own transportation, must possess a valid Washington State driver’s license.
  5. Bilingual competency, preferred.

 

 

Any offered salary is determined based on internal equity, internal salary ranges, market data, applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications.
