Office Hours 7:00 am - 5:30 pm, 1 weekend a month
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Provides assistance in the health care clinic by preparing patients for examination and performing various clerical duties related to clinic activities. Under supervision of the Office Supervisor/Manager, is responsible for the support functions in the office as relates to medical assistants. May function as receptionist, medical assistant, or lab assistant when necessary or assigned and may or may not be the primary responsibility.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assists with related management duties as assigned by the office supervisor/manger. Assists the office supervisor/manger in the daily operations relating to patient, clinical or physician needs.
2. Promotes and enhances positive guest and employee relations.
3. Makes and maintains employee schedule for medical assistants.
4. Helps maintain smooth clinic flow.
5. Works to improve clinic processes, assists in the development of clinic policies and procedures.
6. Covers for supervisors/manager during absences.
7. Assists in training and orientations of new staff.
8. May assist in specialized Medical Assistant training at assigned location(s) as follows:
a. Communicates with Coordinator-Medical Assistant Onboarding on new hire orientee training.
b. Collaborates with locations on proper training handoff.
c. Collaborates in the development of specific competencies for area of specialty.
d. Contributes to the standardization of clinical location orientation.
e. Assists in remediation with other staff clinical skills, as needed.
9. May perform audits of paperwork and assess employee technical knowledge as part of this process.
10.Uses and is knowledgeable of Universal Precautions
11.Acts as a clinical resource to supervisor/manager and other staff.
12.Performs normal duties and responsibilities of an outpatient clinic medical assistant:
a. Prepares patients for physician’s examination by taking routine vital signs (e.g., temperature, respiration, and blood pressure)
b. Brief patient history using standard questionnaire.
c. Prepares individual patient chart and ensure all required documents are included as well as recent test results)
d. Under the direct supervisor of the clinic physicians, assists with the application and removal of cast and suture removal.
e. Provides patient with education and instructive material as directed by physician.
f. Performs clerical/registration functions including chart preparation and documentation
g. Receives and documents patient phone calls and refers to clinic physician as appropriate.
h. Schedules patient appointments, arranges referrals and follow-up care as directed.
i. Files patient charts as required.
j. Prepares billing forms with appropriate diagnostic code to submit to third party payers, collects and posts payments for services.
k. Performs other related duties as required.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Graduate from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) Medical Assistant Program or graduate of a formal medical assistant program with a minimum of five years continuous work as Medical Assistant with verifiable clinical experience.
- Completion of a clinical externship.
- Three (3) years of experience as a Medical Assistant.
- Ability to perform a wide variety of clinical skills as related to ambulatory patient care.
- Basic computer knowledge and keyboarding skills.
- Successful completion of HFMG pharmacology class and test.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:
- Current BLS-C certificate.
- One of the following is required. Failure to retain certification/registration will result in termination from employment with Henry Ford Health: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) eligible for Certification by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) OR
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from the American Medical Technologist organization (AMT) OR
- Certification by the National Healthcare Association (NHA), Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), OR
- Certification from the National Center for Competency Testing (CCT), National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA).
