Position Overview

This full-time role is for a Lead Diesel Mechanic/Technician, based in person within the Service/Shop Department. The primary purpose of the role is to perform skilled mechanical diagnostics and repair on a variety of medium-duty trucks, while simultaneously providing day-to-day coaching and leadership to team members and acting as a back-up support to the Owner. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who possesses a positive attitude and is willing to grow in the position.

Key Responsibilities

The core functions of this position center on expert-level mechanical service and team leadership. The technician is responsible for diagnosing mechanical problems on medium-duty trucks. This requires specialized industry knowledge of Freightliner engines and International engines. In a leadership capacity, the role involves training, coaching, assisting, and providing day-to-day direction to team members. Routine tasks include utilizing basic computer skills, assisting in maintaining a clean and orderly shop and equipment, and strictly observing all safety rules, shop work rules, and company policy. Expected performance includes successful, accurate repair work and maintaining a highly functional, safe, and organized service environment. Less frequent duties involve attending all required shop meetings and training activities, and acting as back-up support to the Shop Owner.

Qualifications and Experience

The role requires extensive technical skills, specifically 5–10 years of diesel experience. Candidates must have an in-depth understanding of the specified medium-duty truck engines and be able to diagnose complex issues. Required experience includes possession of your own toolbox and a variety of tools. A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred as the minimum education. A valid driver’s license is required/preferred. Soft skills are critical, including strong management skills, a self-motivated nature, and great work ethics and customer service skills.

Performance Measures

Performance is measured by successful completion of diagnoses and repairs, demonstrated leadership capability, and adherence to company policies. Behavioral expectations are high, requiring the technician to be a self-starter, possess a positive attitude, and exhibit a willingness to grow in the position. Performance will also be measured using the following scoring metrics:

· % Efficiency

· Average number of repairs completed per week

· Percentage of units repaired correctly

Career Development Opportunities

This position offers a potential growth path into higher levels of management, such as a Service Manager, building upon the established management skills and the function of backing up the Owner. Training and development are mandatory, as the technician is required to attend all shop meetings and training activities. The role itself offers mentorship/coaching opportunities through the requirement to train, coach, and assist team members.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

The work environment is typical of an automotive shop, requiring the technician to work in- person. There are no specified travel requirements. The physical demands of the job include the ability to walk, sit, and stand for periods of time, and the ability to lift approximately 50 lbs. or more.

Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time position. The total compensation includes bonus pay through profit-sharing. Benefits overview includes paid time off, flexible schedule, and an employee discount. The standard schedule is Monday to Friday.
