Job Summary:

The Transit Lead is a frontline leader responsible for ensuring safe, clean, and well-coordinated operations at Government Square. In addition to performing Transit Ambassador duties, this role oversees daily site activity, ensures contractual service requirements are met, and provides and reviews internal reporting to confirm compliance.

The Transit Coordinator serves as a central communication point on site responsible for coordination with Cincinnati Police Department (CPD), Metro staff, Community Responders, and the Collaborative Team. This position requires strong knowledge of bus routes and transit operations, the ability to conduct daily site checks, and confidence in de-escalation, outreach utilization, and emergency response. The Transit Lead is expected to lead by example, address quality-of-life concerns, and report criminal activity as observed.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership, Training & Accountability

  • Train and coach Transit Ambassadors on patrol and cleaning standards, radio use, reporting expectations, and partner coordination.
  • Lead by example through hands-on participation in daily operations.
  • Ensure staff understand and meet contractual service requirements, including cleaning, patrol coverage, and engagement expectations.
  • Hold staff accountable for performance, professionalism, appearance, and communication standards.
  • Review internal reports for accuracy, completeness, and compliance; escalate concerns as needed.


Site Patrols, Safety & Quality of Life Response

  • Conduct and oversee daily site checks to assess cleanliness, safety conditions, and operational readiness.
  • Maintain a visible presence to promote safety and deter unwanted behavior.
  • Address violations of Transit Zone rules and quality-of-life issues including open alcohol, drug activity, gambling, loud music, aggressive panhandling, sleeping in public spaces, and disruptive behavior.
  • Identify and report criminal activity, including suspected drug sales or other illegal conduct, using established escalation and reporting procedures.
  • Utilize de-escalation techniques and outreach resources when appropriate, engaging Community Responders as needed.


Communication, Coordination & Reporting

  • Maintain clear, professional, and consistent radio communication throughout the shift.
  • Coordinate confidently and appropriately with CPD, Metro staff, Community Responders, and the Collaborative Team.
  • Serve as the on-site liaison during incidents, emergencies, or escalated situations until relieved by a Supervisor or responding agency.
  • Complete accurate daily shift reports documenting site conditions, incidents, partner interactions, and staff activity.
  • Monitor reporting trends to verify contractual compliance and identify operational gaps.
  • Ensure emergency responses, criminal activity, and quality-of-life issues are properly documented and escalated.


Cleanliness, Maintenance & Site standards

  • Perform and oversee all contracted cleaning tasks including sweeping, trash removal, spill cleanup, and graffiti removal.
  • Identify and address maintenance issues when possible; promptly report larger concerns.
  • Ensure all transit stops meet cleanliness, safety, and presentation standards.
  • Monitor recurring site issues and recommend operational improvements.


Customer Service & Engagement

  • Proactively greet and assist bus riders and downtown patrons with transit information, directions, events, and route guidance.
  • Set the standard for respectful, inclusive, and solution-focused interactions with the public.
  • Professionalism & Teamwork
  • Model professionalism, reliability, and accountability at all times.
  • Foster a respectful, team-oriented environment grounded in clear expectations.
  • Support leadership initiatives and assist with special projects or operational needs as assigned.


Qualifications:

  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Demonstrated experience in de-escalation and conflict management.
  • Working knowledge of bus routes and transit operations required.
  • Prior experience coordinating with law enforcement, outreach teams, or community partners strongly preferred.


Skills or Specialized Knowledge:

  • Working knowledge of Metro transit operations preferred.
  • Basic maintenance and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to train, coach, and motivate staff.


Physical and Mental Demands:

  • Demonstrate ability to lift up to 50 lbs using proper lifting techniques
  • Ability to stand and be mobile for 8-hour shifts
  • Willingness to work outdoors during various seasonal weather conditions
  • Willingness to work flexible shifts, including weekends, evenings, and holidays
