JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE:  Driver Education Instructor

REPORTS TO:  Lead Driver Education Instructor

FLSA STATUS:  Non-Exempt

WORK SCHEDULE:  Hourly/Part-Time (as assigned)

SALARY:  $24.72 per hour, not to exceed 28 hours per week, pro-rated leave

General Definition of Work

Performs responsible instructional work providing classroom and behind-the-wheel driver education instruction to eligible students in accordance with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI), the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV), and Orange County Schools policies and procedures. The employee is responsible for creating a safe and engaging learning environment, maintaining accurate program records, communicating effectively with students and families, and ensuring that all Driver Education program requirements are met. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Driver Education.

Essential Functions

Instructional Responsibilities

  • Delivers classroom instruction using the North Carolina Driver Education curriculum.
  • Provides safe, effective behind-the-wheel instruction that develops student driving knowledge and skills.
  • Demonstrates and models safe driving habits and defensive driving techniques.
  • Utilizes instructional technology, including Canvas, Google Classroom, Zoom, and audiovisual equipment, to support student learning.
  • Establishes a positive learning environment that promotes student engagement, responsibility, and safety.

Student Support and Communication

  • Communicates program expectations, schedules, and student progress with students and parents.
  • Responds professionally to questions and concerns from students, parents, and school personnel.
  • Collaborates with school site coordinators and the Director of Driver Education to ensure efficient program operations.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student records in accordance with district, state, and federal regulations.

Program Management

  • Maintains accurate attendance, instructional, and program records.
  • Completes and submits required reports and documentation in a timely manner.
  • Ensures assigned Driver Education vehicles are clean, safe, and ready for instruction.
  • Coordinates routine vehicle maintenance and promptly reports repair needs.
  • Adheres to all Orange County Schools, NCDPI, and NCDMV policies and procedures.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates professionalism consistent with the North Carolina Educator Code of Ethics.
  • Participates in required professional learning and certification renewal activities.
  • Supports the mission, vision, and strategic priorities of Orange County Schools.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Driver Education or designee.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of North Carolina Driver Education curriculum, instructional strategies, and NCDMV licensing requirements.
  • Knowledge of safe driving practices and defensive driving techniques.
  • Ability to effectively instruct students in both classroom and behind-the-wheel settings.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students, families, colleagues, and community partners.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to organize and maintain accurate records and reports.
  • Proficiency with instructional technology and digital learning platforms.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in emergency and safety-related situations.

Education and Experience

Required

  • Valid North Carolina Professional Educator's License.
  • Current North Carolina Driver Education Instructor Certification.
  • Valid North Carolina driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Experience and training sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the position.

Preferred

  • Previous experience teaching Driver Education.
  • Experience using Canvas, Google Classroom, Zoom, and other instructional technology platforms.
  • CPR and First Aid certification.

Physical Requirements

Work requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, reach, and operate a motor vehicle for extended periods. The employee must be able to safely demonstrate driving techniques, supervise students during vehicle instruction, and occasionally lift or carry instructional materials weighing up to 25 pounds. Visual acuity, hearing, manual dexterity, and the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle are essential functions of this position.

Special Requirements

  • Must maintain a valid North Carolina driver's license.
  • Must maintain North Carolina Driver Education Instructor Certification.
  • Must complete all required background checks and district onboarding requirements.
  • Must maintain an acceptable driving record in accordance with Orange County Schools policies.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with Orange County Schools policies and procedures by the Director of Driver Education or designee.
