Program Specialist - Automation and Control Systems

About the Role

We are seeking a Program Specialist to join our Operations & Engineering team, specializing in control systems, PLC programming, SCADA/HMI development, measurement, and industrial automation.

This role is ideal for candidates with hands-on experience in PLCs, SCADA, instrumentation, and industrial networks who want ownership of projects, problem-solving in real industrial environments, and mentoring opportunities.

You will work closely with engineering, operations, and project management to deliver high-quality automation solutions, troubleshoot complex systems, and help grow a skilled technical team.

Key Responsibilities

1. Control Systems & PLC Programming

Program, troubleshoot, and maintain PLCs across multiple platforms:

  • Allen-Bradley
  • Schneider Electric
  • GE
  • IDEC
  • Automation Direct
  • Emerson

Develop, debug, and implement PLC programming utilizing:

  • Ladder Logic
  • Function Block
  • Structured Text

Maintain clean, well-labeled, standards-compliant programs

Develop controls for critical-system infrastructure and corresponding instruments

2. SCADA & HMI

Configure and maintain SCADA/HMI systems:

  • Ignition
  • FactoryTalk View SE/ME
  • Vijeo Designer
  • EB Pro
  • Beijer
  • Crimson

Implement, design, and troubleshoot:

  • User interfaces and graphics
  • Scripting
  • Alarming

Support operator interface optimization and monitoring solutions

3. Flow Computers & Instrumentation

Configure and troubleshoot flow computers:

  • Realflo
  • ROCLink
  • OMNICom
  • Flow-X
  • PCCU
  • Field Tools

Conduct field calibration, installation, and commissioning of:

  • Sensors
  • RTUs
  • Instrumentation

Maintain documentation for:

  • Logic
  • I/O Lists
  • Customer-requested diagrams

4. Network & Communication Systems

Install, set up, and configure industrial Ethernet switches and radio connectivity:

  • Ubiquiti
  • Freewave
  • Similar technologies

Troubleshoot:

  • Industrial network issues
  • Fiber-optic links
  • Communication protocols
  • Ensure OT network integrity, segregation, and security best practices

6. Optional / Value-Add Skills

Update AutoCAD Electrical drawings

Maintain:

  • BOMs
  • Control Narratives
  • P&IDs
  • Project Documentation

Industrial protocol experience:

  • RS-485
  • TCP/IP
  • Profibus
  • Similar protocols

Familiarity with:

  • IIoT
  • MQTT
  • OPC UA
  • Industrial SCADA Integrations

Knowledge of:

  • ISA Standards
  • IEC 61131
  • NFPA 70
  • NFPA 70E

Work Environment & Schedule Requirements

Must be willing and available to work overtime, holidays, and weekends as necessary to support:

  • Commissioning activities
  • Project deadlines
  • Operational emergencies

Travel Requirements

  • Must be willing to drive extensively to various field locations and customer sites.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Clean driving record required.

Critical Requirement

This is a hands-on, field-based PLC Programming role.

Candidates without verified experience programming industrial PLCs will not be considered.

A technical competency test is required during the interview process.

Requirements & Qualifications

Education-Based Pathway

Bachelor's Degree in:

  • Engineering
  • Computer Science
  • Related Technical Field

1–3 years of hands-on experience with:

  • PLC Programming
  • SCADA Systems
  • Industrial Automation

Experience-Based Pathway

No formal degree required.

3–5 years of hands-on experience with:

  • PLCs
  • SCADA/HMI
  • Industrial Automation
