Job Summary
The Underwriter is responsible for evaluating residential mortgage loan applications to determine creditworthiness and compliance with investor, regulatory, and 1st National Bank guidelines. This role analyzes borrower financial information, credit history, income, assets, and collateral to assess risk and make sound lending decisions.

The Underwriter works collaboratively with the Head Underwriter, Mortgage Loan Originators, Processors, and other internal partners to ensure timely and accurate loan decisions while maintaining a high level of customer service and regulatory compliance. This is a hybrid role with some travel to our office as needed (less than 15%).

Responsibilities

  • Analyze applicants’ financial status, credit history and reports, and property evaluations to determine the feasibility of granting a loan
  • Correspond with Loan Originators and Processors to resolve questions regarding application information
  • Approve loans within specified limits or refer loans to the Loan Committee for approval
  • Ensure loan agreements are complete, accurate, and in accordance with company policy
  • Respond to telephone and written inquiries concerning loan processing information
  • Collaborate with Loan Officers to resolve mortgage application problems
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal and state regulations, including fair lending requirements

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Accounting, or related field preferred, but not required

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of underwriting experience
  • Experience in mortgage processing, lending, or related mortgage operations experience
  • Experience reviewing income, assets, credit, and collateral documentation preferred
  • Familiarity with conventional, FHA, VA, and USDA lending guidelines preferred
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and independent decision-making skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced office environment
  • Ability to remain in a seated office environment and work at a computer for extended periods
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professionalism while keeping a team focused mindset
